UW Medicine Pathology brings together state-of-the-art technology and highly trained, world renowned personnel to provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized service to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories, and other health care organizations. Our operations are based at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union, Northwest Hospital and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Pathology faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's Hospital, the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. These collaborative efforts have generated innovative, translational studies in the basic mechanisms of disease as they apply to diagnostic pathology.

Funded in 2018, the Dog Aging Project will create a nationwide 10-year longitudinal study of healthy aging in 10,000 companion dogs. The goal is to identify the genetic and environmental factors that influence healthy aging, and to understand how these factors shape aging. A small group of these dogs will be enrolled in a trial testing the ability of a promising drug to increase healthspan and lifespan in dogs. Results from this large-scale study of aging in companion dogs could have a powerful impact on the quality of life both for companion dogs and humans.

The Department of Pathology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a DIRECTOR OF PROGRAM OPERATIONS.

Working closely with Dog Aging Project’s leaders and partners, the Director of Program Operations will provide oversight and senior level reporting for the program as well as serving as principal point of contact for operational issue resolution.  The Director of Program Operations will work with Partners to:

Manage the strategic operations for the program, including working closely with Principal Investigator and Program Directors to adjust overall program goals Establish detailed executional plan for each phase of the project Ensure operational readiness for implementation of goals outlined by the program Oversee execution of each phase of the program and be accountable for program progress

The role will build on the strong executive, business and technical relationships with program leaders, staff and partners to ensure timely completion of defined programmatic goals.  This will include oversight of major program workstream, collaborations, and some day-to-day management of activities, as needed. The role may require involvement in execution of and compliance with agreements, carrying out scientific tasks or workstreams to meet project deadlines, forming connections and maintaining communication with external scientific collaborators, and nurturing relationships with potential donors and funding sources. This role will need to pay particular attention to the partner relationship, and manage the interests of the University of Washington as well as its partner institutions.

The Director of Program Operations will connect with stakeholders from many functional areas of several organizations at many organizational levels. The role will be part project manager ensuring deadlines are met to drive the Dog Aging Project work product and part diplomat gaining alignment and collaboration to insure all interests are met.

Job Duties will include, but are not limited to:
•Manage Dog Aging Project program operations with partner institutions to acquire data and samples, analyzing project data and provide program outputs;
•Clearly communicate and manage Dog Aging Project objectives to partners and stakeholders including demonstrating value of project to grant organizations and potential donors;
•Drive, track and report on Dog Aging Projectprogress to internal and external partners;
•Participate in creating strategies for successful Dog Aging Project implementation, including collaborating with parties throughout partner institutions, as well as with partners leading ancillary studies, to accomplish project goals;
•Provide budgetary oversight working with the accounting and finance team.
•Potential to participate in speaking engagements and written article preparation related to the value of the program for the purpose of engaging participants, grant organizations, or major donors.

Minimum Requirements:
•Masters degree in health or biological sciences or related field (ie bioinformatics, medicinal chemistry, public health, etc), and/or business or equivalent work experience;
•5 to 10 years of experience in a combination of strategy, operations, clinical or biological research, genetics or genomics, data analytics, program management, administration, communication and financial management;
•Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to appropriately manage stakeholders, as well as balance multiple workstreams and competing priorities;
•A strong collaborative mindset that enable the ability to interact with, influence, and act on many internal and external organizational levels;
•Comfortable with large amounts of data and information, and the ability to accept and channel ambiguity into project frameworks;
•Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and to engender trust;
•Strong analytical skills, solid business acumen, and the ability to span stakeholders;
•Experience synthesizing information and presenting concepts to constituents across a wide range of fields (scientific, clinical, information technology, finance, etc.);
•Ability to identify and solve problems, analyze data and implement and troubleshoot solutions;
•Ability to maintain the best interest of the University of Washington and the Dog Aging Project, amidst competing priorities and conflicting feedback from a variety of constituents;
•Excellent verbal and written communication as well as editing skills;
•Proven proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Drive Suite (Doc, Sheets, and Slides);
•Reliability, integrity, grace-under-pressure;
•Willingness to travel 25% of the time.

Desired Requirements:
•Background in genetics and genomics research with a strong understanding of data and sample acquisition process development, genomic sequencing technologies. Working understanding of canine genetics preferred;
•Experience directing multi-year, multi-phase, multi-institutional projects or programs;
•Track record for non-profit fundraising;
•Working understanding of marketing and public relations channel, medium and modalities;
•Exposure to the principles of organizational dynamics.
