Under the general direction of the Chief Research Information Officer (CRIO), the Director of Research Information Technologies (DRIT) is a senior leader within UW Medicine Information Technology Services (ITS) who is responsible for providing operational oversight of the clinical research information systems teams at UW Medicine. This position leads the research, design, development, testing, and maintenance of highly complex information systems used in support of research initiatives at UW Medicine as well as direct, oversee, and manage the teams which support the research informatics solutions and platforms for UW Medicine. These include the Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) Program Office, Research IT needs for the UW Medicine EHR, the Northwest Biotrust Consent Process, the Translational Research and Information Lab in collaboration with the UW Medicine Health Sciences Library, the National Center for Data To Health (CD2H), and the Institute for Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) Biomedical Informatics Platform teams. Teams include the Clinical Study Data Collection Platform (RedCap) team, the Software Engineering team; the Electronic Health Record Research Consulting team, and the Infrastructure Management team. The number and focus of teams may fluctuate to meet strategic organizational priorities.
Due to the complexity of the Research IT needs at UW Medicine, the overall leadership of the research informatic platform teams by the DRIT is tightly coordinated with the CRIO. The CRIO is a faculty member with a background in biomedical informatics and enterprise research information systems. The CRIO will be responsible for development and refinement of the vision and strategic plan for clinical and translational informatics at UW Medicine. The CRIO will engage faculty to enable usage and support for platforms developed by the DRIT. The DRIT and CRIO will jointly work on assigning and coordinating faculty and staff of specific platforms and informatic projects.
Because of the broad and complex nature of UW Medicine, its information systems and the close interactions between the clinical, financial, QA/QI, operational and research systems and their applications, the DRIT must develop strong working relationships with the ITS leaders of these areas. The position will report to the CRIO and will work closely with ITS executives to include the Chief Information Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, the Chief Technology Officer, the Chief Analytics Officer, and the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer. Collaborative relationships with ITS directors will be essential in balancing the needs of the clinical and business space with those of research. Because of the dependency on data and analytics, relationships with both the Senior Director for Analytics and the Chief Analytics Officer will be especially important. The interdependency of data, analytics and research clinical systems and their associated workflows and data necessitates a collaborative and cooperative rapport between these leaders.
This position exercises substantial discretion, independent judgment and decision-making authority in applying the responsibilities called for. Responsibilities are to be carried out at a significantly high level of technical expertise; providing authoritative advice and counsel to the CRIO and Chief Information Officer as well as UW Medicine executive leaders; collaborating with executive teams, stakeholders, researchers, and technical and business operations teams to successfully develop, implement and manage the Research Information Technologies program.
This position will participate in the development of research system strategy and implementation; direct the on-going maintenance & support, architecture, analysis and design services of research systems; manage the research project portfolio and oversee teams of information technology professionals, data analysts and project managers to support internal and external clients of UW Medicine.
This position specifically promotes UW Medicine’s research strategy, focusing on providing our research community with well-supported services and tools that meet federal, state, and accreditation regulations as well as standards and guidelines for UW Medicine. This position is responsible for providing professional leadership, encompassing design and implementation of management processes in coordination with research clients, ITS’ team managers and members, and vendors.
This position is responsible to the CRIO and receives strategic direction from an executive level governance committee. During strategic planning and setting operational direction, this position engages in a dyad leadership with the CRIO. The CRIO’s operational focus is typically with faculty; however, the DRIT’s operational focus is with professional staff and faculty, to include those within the University’s Institute of Translational Health Sciences and Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME). The DRIT will work with diverse UW Medicine personnel, such as administrators, directors, managers, faculty, staff, and vendors to ensure that system design, implementation, and ongoing support meets client business requirements. UW Medicine holds a complex inventory of information systems. Data warehouses within UW Medicine must integrate this information and its vocabularies and syntax and present it in a consistent manner. The incumbent must be able to work with a diversity of both technology and staff.
Responsibilities include:
Leadership and Strategy (60%)
Project Management (40%)
What you’ll bring to the table: (minimum requirements)
7+ years experience must include the following:
