HMC Maintenance has an outstanding opportunity for a full time day shift Gardener Lead.
The Gardener Lead leads and performs skilled work in the maintenance of institution grounds and landscapes. The Gardener Lead performs skilled tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of trees, lawns, and ornamental plants, such as soil testing, pruning, transplanting plant material, and applying chemicals. The Gardener Lead will plan maintenance and improvements of lawns and gardens, and be able to supervise the work of less skilled assistants.
Job Responsibilities:
• Perform and lead other in preparing soil for planting; plant seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs.
• Responsible for maintaining equipment records and maintenance programs.
• Clean, service, and maintain tools and equipment, including power equipment.
• Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge aerate, and maintain lawns.
• Install repair, and operate lawn sprinkler systems.
• Transplant seedlings, trees, and shrubs, and other nursery stock.
• Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe, and control weeds.
• Prune, spray, and fertilize trees, shrubs, and ground covers.
• Remove debris, leaves, brush, snow, and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps, and parking facilities. Apply ice melter, sand and gravel.
• Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc.
• Read and interpret blueprints for projects.
• Do research as needed to aid in plant selection and problem solving.
• Use a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edger’s, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pesticide sprayers.
• Participate in cleaning up litter and other messes around campus grounds.
• Operate power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, roto-tillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters, and snow blowers.
• Assist in putting up and taking down holiday displays.
• Understand snow and ice removal equipment and processes, and be able to lead that process in the absence of the shop lead.
• Must be willing to respond to emergency call-ins, including snow and ice removal.
• Direct the work of others.
• Apply pesticides and herbicides to greenery, and plant material
• May set-up for outdoor events and return site to original condition.
• Perform duties of Gardener 2.
• Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
Physical ability to do required work AND two years of experience as a Gardener or equivalent work involving grounds maintenance, plant care and landscape construction
OR
Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience as stated above AND one year of college level training in botany, horticulture, forestry, landscape, irrigation or allied field
OR
equivalent education/experience.
