The Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC) is a worldwide leader in injury cause and prevention research. Founded in 1985, HIPRC is a multidisciplinary research center supported by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.  HIPRC faculty and staff are devoted to conducting research, education, and community outreach aimed at diminishing the personal impact of trauma, and broadening the effectiveness of injury prevention and treatment programs regionally and nationally.

The Public Information Specialist (PIS) is responsible for day-to-day management and production of communications activities for HIPRC.  This full-time position provides communications, public relations, marketing, and visual design resources to support the research, outreach and educational mission of HIPRC. This position works collaboratively with medical, scientific, public health, and communications professionals to develop accurate and engaging content designed to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries around the world, promote health equity, and to support the strategic goals of HIPRC activities through a variety of communication channels.

This position reports to the Program Manager with matrix relationship to HIPRC Director. The duties of this position fall into three areas:
1) Development of Communication Message and Products = 60%;
2) Project Management = 20%;
3) Strategic Planning = 20%.

The successful public information specialist requires prior experience in communications with strong verbal and written communication skills, a high level of organization and a keen understanding of HIPRC’s mission.  The PIS will be tasked with implementing a comprehensive communications strategic plan, maintaining a strong brand for HIPRC programs and activities, and developing and managing external communications in close collaboration with the UW Medicine communications team to share accurate and reliable information. The PIS must exhibit a high level of professionalism and maturity, be well organized, able to multi-task and able to meet deadlines.

HIPRC is a nationally known, respected and influential research center within UW.  The PIS serves as a representative of HIPRC and UW in communications with internal and external individuals and organizations. Clear and comprehensive coverage of HIPRC research, education, training and outreach activities serves to enhance potential public and private funding for HIPRC and for UW. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Development of Communication message and products = 60%
  • Develop messaging campaigns targeting underserved communities to broaden the reach of injury prevention messages, tailoring the relevance to meet identified community needs and interests
  • Develop informational brochures and fact sheets to inform policy makers on injury prevention topics
  • Manage internal and external communications, ensuring the accuracy of scientific, public health, and injury prevention content
  • Develop timely and impactful publications, print collateral, and website assets
  • Develop and manage content calendar, ensuring consistency and quality of content production and messaging across diverse channels
  • Identify possible news stories, press releases, profiles, and research features for consideration by UW Medicine Director of Media Relations to highlight injury research and outreach messages to external community on UW Medicine Newsroom, UW Medicine Website, UW Medicine Huddle, UW Medicine social media, and other possible channels. Work with Director of News Media to draft copy.
  • Provide writing, editing, and creative support, as needed, for HIPRC programs and cores
  • Display creative ability in design work and suggests visual elements to enhance external communications
  • Coordinate development of content for workshops and trainings
  • Facilitate communications with HIPRC networks of injury research and prevention professionals and organizations. Facilitate a collaborative approach to working with these networks.
  • Develop production schedules and meet deadlines, including keeping in contact with other authors/writers and providing assistance in article development when needed
  • Conduct interviews of HIPRC faculty and trainees to promote HIPRC research, accomplishments and activities
  • Photograph HIPRC activities and events as needed;
  • Write features, news/policy briefs, and fact sheets for HIPRC website
  • Develop injury prevention messages and materials based on health education principles and public health theory and practice.
  • Edit and proofread for various types of content

    Project Management = 20%
  • Participate in regular planning meetings with program and core leadership
  • Demonstrate sound planning, analysis and evaluation of specific projects
  • Maintain a strong brand for HIPRC programs and activities; oversee consistency of voice, layout, presentations and design

    Strategic Planning =20%
  • Formulate and oversee an annual communications strategic plan with HIPRC programs and cores, assessing opportunities and evaluating communications needs
  • Positively interacts with medical, scientific, public health, and communications professionals within HIPRC and across the University to ensure understanding of communications strategies
  • Work with UW Medicine Director of Media Relations to develop content and resources in strategic topic areas to expand HIPRC media coverage among external audiences
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of emerging communications trends and integrate these practices into strategic initiatives. Follow UW Medicine Web and Marketing standards to ensure HIPRC remains up to date with the current brand standards.  Participate in UW school and UW Medicine forums/meetings to stay abreast of best practices and news standards and news channels.
  • Develop communications success metrics and share with HIPRC, program and core leadership on a quarterly basis; measure social media and website metrics and other analytics against communications goals to guide priorities

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, public health or related discipline
    Type and Years of Experience: Minimum 3 years in communications positions of increasing scope, complexity and diversity of responsibility.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Knowledge and experience working with:
           o Content management systems (e.g., WordPress)
           o Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) or similar
           o Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Experience conducting interviews
  • Experience taking and editing photos
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally in all forms of communications, e.g., verbal and written, one-on-one, and in groups
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare communications requiring interpretation of complex, scientific and technical  information into language and format accessible to general public
  • Demonstrated ability to write for print and digital media platforms; displays solid editing and proofreading skills;
  • Experience working independently, and as a member and/or leader of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, take initiative, set priorities, and handle multiple projects efficiently and effectively
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new or unfamiliar technologies
  • Ability to actively demonstrate customer service
  • Ability to contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field.
  • Five or more years' communications positions of increasing responsibility, complexity and diversity;
  • Demonstrated interest in health, injury prevention, public health, or health education
  • Experience working in an academic, healthcare environment
  • Prior experience with staff supervision and mentoring
  • Strong background in working with diverse management and employee groups within a large organization is preferred.
  • Proficiency (oral and written) in language other than English
  • Candidates with diverse or non-traditional backgrounds.
