UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington. UW-IT provides strategic planning, oversight, and direction for UW’s extensive IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.
IT Infrastructure (ITI), a division within UW-IT, provides the ubiquitous technology infrastructure required to sustain UW as a leading research, teaching, learning, and medical institution. These technologies support the UW’s core mission at all levels – research, teaching, learning, healthcare, and all the necessary underlying administrative and operational functions required for successful operations. ITI provides infrastructure in support of all three UW campuses (Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma), UW Medicine (medical centers and clinics), the state K-20 Education Network (300+ school districts), and the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (research & education networks throughout the PNW and Pacific Rim). ITI designs, builds, and operates technology infrastructure services inclusive of networks, computing & storage solutions, data centers, telecommunications services, identity & access management, as well as the infrastructure tools required to integrate and report on these services.
The Infrastructure Software Tools (IST) team within ITI designs, develops, deploys, integrates, and maintains critical software that support a variety of different infrastructure and customer support areas. IST applications are involved with networks, billing, monitoring, service center, and other computing areas.
UW-IT has an outstanding full time opportunity for a Infrastructure Software Tools Engineer.
This Infrastructure Software Tools Engineer position is responsible for developing software and solutions especially for network management. In some cases, this involves development of custom UW-specific software. In other cases, this involves support and integration of open source and commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) software. In all cases it requires evaluation, adaptation, integration, and management of sophisticated system, network, and application software to support the research, teaching, and administrative computing requirements of UW units. More generally, this position will support and extend a wide range of networking and computing tools, technologies and services used to manage the University’s information technology infrastructure.
This position will be responsible for automation and developing inventory, management, monitoring and related systems that support several thousand customers, devices, and networks with over a million users. The networks provide services across the country and around the world. This position improves the workload on other staff by removing repetitive work and allowing others to work on harder tasks.
The Infrastructure Software Tools Engineer is expected to be a subject matter expert in one or more current programming or scripting languages including Python and JavaScript. It is preferable but not required that the Engineer have experience using additional technologies such as PostgresSQL, Flask, Django, jQuery, Angular, Bootstrap, RabbitMQ, Cassandra, Docker, and Kubernetes. The position holder is also expected to have a working understanding of SQL databases. It is also preferable that the Software Engineer have a working knowledge of networking concepts such as DNS, DHCP, the OSI layers, and general network security.
This position is responsible for software design, development, deployment, integration, and maintenance within a very complex and distributed area that affects hundreds of thousands of faculty, staff, students, patients, and community members. This position directly interacts with and supports the UW (including three campuses and UW Medicine), K-20, and Pacific Northwest Gigapop networks and other critical UW IT infrastructure. The successful position holder will be an active team member and engage with other subject matter experts throughout the University and beyond.
Because of the nature of software development, this position must be able to work with a diverse group of people who are both technical and non-technical. The incumbent must be able to work iteratively in both self-directed and team environments and often with people who are not co-located.
This position contributes to the University’s success by designing, developing, and maintaining critical infrastructure software automation and other applications that support:
- The inventory, management, monitoring system, and related tools that support the several thousand customers, devices, and networks. The supported networks provide services across the country and around the Pacific Rim.
- UW Campus including students, staff, faculty at Seattle, Tacoma, Bothell, and other off campus locations. Including tens of thousands of wireless network customers.
- UW Clinical networks including Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, and, the UW Medicine administrative and operational units, and the regional UW Neighborhood clinics and administrative offices.
- The Pacific Northwest Gigapop which provides elite high-speed Internet service to research and education entities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Hawaii. Services include connectivity to the Internet 2 national R&E network.
- The Pacific Wave layer 2 peering network. Providing peering around the Pacific Rim with other national research and education networks.
- The Washington K-20 network connecting: public Washington baccalaureate universities including Washington State University, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, etc., hundreds of public K-12 school districts, community and technical colleges, and other educational networks.
- Multiple networks and datacenters in multiple regions.
- Automation and monitoring the network infrastructure software for the above areas.
