The Department of Neurological Surgery specializes in the management of acute brain and spinal trauma, vascular disease, disorders of the brain, peripheral nerves and spine. We are also co-directing the UW Medicine Neurosciences Institute and house the Sports Health and Safety Institute (SHSI), a new institute created in partnership with the NFL. Our physicians practice at Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Valley Medical Center, the VA Hospital, and throughout the 5 state WWAMI Region. In addition, the department has one of the premier academic training programs in the world. We have an outstanding research program ranging from spine regeneration to brain computer interfaces and a broad array of clinical trials.
The Department of Neurological Surgery currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 2.
The University of Washington Stroke & Applied Neuroscience Center Translational Research Team conducts multidisciplinary translational research projects at the intersection of neurological surgery, bioengineering, and mechanical engineering to investigate the pathophysiology and course of diseases and disorders of the brain and its blood vessels, and use this knowledge to advance neurological surgery practice and patient outcomes.
This Research Scientist/Engineer 2 will serve as the UW Stroke & Applied Neuroscience Center's Translational Research Team Lead Scientist and report to the Center's Associate Director. Will provide day-to-day management of the Translational Research Team portfolio and staff. Will provide research consultation to faculty, resident physicians, and other collaborators. Will contribute to the development and implementation of novel research methodologies, particularly intraoperative neurological surgery research. Contributes to ideas & methods for the expansion of existing, or development of, new research efforts. Contributes to intellectual development activities. Assists in procurement of additional/new funding through contributions to technical proposal preparation and/or presentations. Scopes tasks develops approaches for moderately difficult tasks. Monitors the work of junior staff to ensure that correct procedures are followed; provides direction to assure completion of technical tasks & projects. Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals. Assists in preparation of reports, papers, presentations, new proposals, etc., and may collaborate on some; presents papers at technical meetings. Provides ideas to improve efficiency at group level. Has established network in internal peer group; starts becoming part of identifiable external peer network. Knows & effectively uses the fundamental concepts, practices & procedures of cerebrovascular neurological surgery, bioengineering, and mechanical engineering specialization; continues development of technical expertise & knowledge through experience & application.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Life or Health Science and at least two years experience in an area related to medical, health, or biomedical research. Some or all may be in relevant educational programs. Bachelor’s degree in health or life sciences. Experience working in a clinical and surgical environment. Experience consenting patients for research and/or medical procedures. Experience in patient screening, recruitment, and chart abstraction. Experience in writing research protocols and institutional review board applications.
At least one year of experience in neurological surgery research. Experience working in a neurological surgery clinical research, particularly cerebrovascular patients and intraoperative research. Familiarity with angiography procedures, neuroimaging, 3D printing, and computational fluid dynamics. Experience in scientific team management including facilitating clinical trial agreements, data use agreements, and confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements. Scientific writing experience (abstracts, peer-reviewed publications, and grants) in Neurological Surgery or related field, preferably related to cerebrovascular neurological surgery and/or stroke. Experience working with patients with neurological deficits.
