UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Laboratory Information Systems Manager. The person in this role will manage the team of IT staff responsible for supporting and maintaining departmental Research and Clinical Operations, through hands-on management of the Laboratory Medicine clinical laboratory system, its integration with the hospital EMR, and the associated middleware systems that drive effective operation of the testing platforms. Align the Clinical IT efforts with departmental and enterprise priorities while ensuring excellent customer service.
Additionally, the Laboratory Information Systems Manager requires the ability to manage multiple projects and team members in a rapidly changing, complex environment. Keen attention to overall business needs, and a broad knowledge of the department's database applications, interfaces, and strategic direction are required to successfully perform the functions of this job. As this position interacts with various enterprise and departmental stakeholders, excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. A knowledge of software development lifecycle methodologies is required to help guide development and enhancement work in support of system maintenance objectives. An in-depth knowledge of the Sunquest FlexiLab LIS, or a similar product, along with the ancillary systems that comprise the complete laboratory information system, networking technologies, laboratory billing processes, and Healthcare IT compliance requirements are also key for a successful candidate.
The person in this role ensures that the department's data integrity, patient reporting, management reporting, and interfaces (external and internal) are functional, well-maintained, and meet the needs of the department. This includes over 30 million results every year across numerous laboratories and facilities. The manager reports to the Associate Director of the Informatics Division. The manager is also responsible for staffing and planning projects critical to the department's and UW Medicine's strategic goals.
Management and oversight of maintaining Laboratory Medicine IT assets:
- Applications: Laboratory Information System (Sunquest), Middleware (Remisol, DI, and other related middleware), Health Information Systems (Epic, ORCA/Cerner), Interfaces (Mindscape, Amalga, Iguana, Atlas, Mayo, and other related interfaces)
- Configuration: definition and execution of all test order and results reporting catalogs for the clinical laboratory systems, including Sunquest LIS, Data Innovations Middleware, Remisol Middleware, RALS Middleware, AQURE Middleware, etc
- Configuration Consultation: with UW Medicine Clinical Application team to define, build, test and verify effective use of the Epic and Cerner EHR systems for accessing and reporting laboratory testing deployed in the UW hospitals and Clinics
- Testing & Validation: for approximately 200 instrument interfaces, supporting reorganization for increased efficiency, deployment of new and improved laboratory test methods, and other related efforts
- Testing & Validation: for approximately 25 EHR interfaces to support customer interfaces via Atlas, MayoAccess and Direct interfaces and enterprise EHR EPIC and Cerner interfaces supporting clinical care in the UW network (hospitals and clinics)
- Implementation: new instrument interfaces, EHR interfaces, vendor software upgrades, middleware, and other related implementations
Core skills:
- Project & portfolio delivery: in support of the Project/Portfolio management team, staff, plan and manage the Clinical IT team to deliver prioritized strategic and tactical projects supporting the mission of the department and UW Medicine
- Purchasing: prepare purchase orders, vendor management, coordinate with divisional directors to align purchases with project goals and divisional budgets
- Budgeting: budgetary management and oversight for staffing and supplies related to the Clinical Laboratory IT Support/Maintenance team
- Communication & customer service: communication with leadership, other divisions, and external groups
- Regulatory compliance: ensure compliance with laboratory and security regulations, oversight of risk assessments
- Develop MBO's (Management by Objective) plan for Laboratory Medicine IT Services
- Continuous process improvement utilizing Lean, Six Sigma, or similar
Supervisory Duties and Performance Management:
- Interview and hire new staff
- Plan and direct training for staff; ensure initial competencies
- Manage performance and conduct annual performance reviews
- Act upon leave requests, assign and schedule work
- Identify continuing education opportunities for staff
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Biology or related field (equivalent education may substitute for degree requirement), AND six to eight years of experience in clinical database management and exposure to complex healthcare IT environments, to include LIS, billing, ADT, and orders interfaces.
Additional Requirements:
- Demonstrate team and project management skills and have a track record of successfully launching initiatives and new software into healthcare and/or laboratory settings.
- Have intermediate knowledge of HL-7 is required, as clinical interfacing between systems (internal and customer) is a critical element of the position.
- Specify new software and enhancement requests and follow up with staff and vendors to ensure deadlines, software quality standards, and documentation requirements are met.
Desired:
- Master's in Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics, Biology or related field.
- Agile development experience
- Experience with SunQuest, Iguana, Middleware and EMRs (Epic and Cerner)
- Proven, successful collaboration in a multi-site academic health system would be valuable for a successful candidate
