Position Purpose
The Leadership in Higher Education (LHE) M.Ed. program is designed to prepare multidimensional leaders through experiences integrating theory and practice. The program offers opportunities for individuals who seek leadership positions at community colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations. Competencies developed in the program prepare students to assume a wide range of roles that include student life (e.g. residential life, career center, advising, enrollment management, and student activities), academic affairs, financial aid, multicultural affairs, institutional research, P-16 transitions, and nonprofit work that addresses issues of policy and practice.
Reporting to the Director of the Leadership in Higher Education Master’s program, the LHE Program Specialist will provide direct support to program students and will work collaboratively with the Director and program faculty to assist in managing the Leadership in Higher Education (LHE) Master’s program.
Position Overview:
This position will lead the recruiting efforts of prospective students, support faculty advising and provide other support to program students, and will form collaborative relationships with program leaders across campus and other higher education institutes and nonprofits to create opportunities for internships with students in the LHE program. In addition, and in collaboration with the faculty lead, this position will provide support to the development, administration, evaluation, and implementation of the LHE M.Ed. program and provide administrative support for faculty members whose courses are part of the LHE curriculum; including identifying and securing guest speakers for the LHE colloquium and supporting learning, studying, and writing strategies for students; and providing evidence-based support for assessment and program design activities within LHE.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:
The LHE master’s program develops scholarly practitioners by establishing robust partnerships with community-based organizations and campus-based departments and programs. These partnerships provide field-based internships and exposure to deep content knowledge shared by higher education stakeholders. The program offers theoretical coursework that focuses on real-world experience through the use of case studies and theory-to-practice class activities that further support the scholar-practitioner training model. Additionally, coursework and internships build students’ ability to navigate complex higher education organizational structures, emphasizing the importance of relationships between the centrality of the student experience, organizational dynamics, and change.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Development and Management of Internship Partners and Internship Experience
• Develop and facilitate internship site offerings by working with higher education programs and organizations.
• Maintain relationships with partner sites and internship supervisors through consistent, professional contact.
• Support LHE students as they work in their internship placements. This includes facilitating the site-selection and site-assignment processes, providing support for professional and skill-based work, and supervising internship course assignments.
• Provide professional and career development opportunities for students as it relates to their internship experiences.
• Advise and prepare students for engagement in internships on and off campus and higher education professional development.
• Manage event planning and coordination for LHE events, including M.Ed. final presentations and networking events with alumni.
Recruitment & Admissions
• Work collaboratively with Office of Student Services to plan recruitment activities.
• Advise and counsel in person, by phone, letter and email communication with prospective students throughout the admission process.
• Proactively develop and execute multiple outreach channels including social media, networking events, and outreach with community partners to ensure diversity in the candidate pool.
• Represent the program at community events, and pathways to program.
Support of LHE Programming
• In coordination with program faculty, support the daily operations of the LHE program.
• Work with program faculty in the visioning and implementation of LHE priorities.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to pursue and enhance the goals of LHE.
• In coordination the EDFLPS area, implement plans to support overall integration of LHE program within the area.
• As requested, represent LHE to external organizations and constituents.
• Develop communications with faculty, students, staff, and outside organizations and colleges to disseminate program information, build internship partnerships, and enhance opportunities for LHE students.
• Manage course schedule planning.
• Establish and maintain new and existing outreach efforts and vehicles, including ongoing development of program website.
Qualifications:
• A Master’s degree with two (2) years of experience in higher education;
• Experience working with college student populations;
• Experience supervising and evaluating college students in internship or community-based learning placements;
• Demonstrated experience coordinating cross-campus partnerships for academic or non-academic units; enjoy working and interacting with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds;
