UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Building Services Department (BSD) has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Maintenance Custodian I. BSD is known for its environmentally-friendly green cleaning practices and proudly supports its staff through employee development programs such as: English language/writing classes, computer instruction and leadership training for motivated employees.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
• Clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures in accordance with established procedures and standards; refill restroom dispensers;
• Clean classrooms in accordance with established procedures and standards;
• Dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty wastebaskets;
• Set-up and take down equipment, such as chalkboards and easels, and furnishings, such as folding chairs and tables needed for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events;
• Collect all recyclable materials;
• Use assigned power equipment and hand tools such as wet- and dry-vacuum cleaners, restroom cleaners, blowers, steam cleaners, carpet extractors, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the general maintenance of floors, restroom facilities, walls, carpets, stairwells, and furniture;
• Lock and unlock buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report unauthorized occupants;
• Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures;
• Replace/fill dispenser for soap, tissue, hand towels (restroom supplies).
• Replace Waterless Urinal Cartridges.
• Repair and/or replace dispensers for soap, tissue, hand towels (restroom supplies).
• Maintain/(minor) repair/replace assigned power equipment and hand tools and their components, such as wet- and dry-vacuum cleaners, restroom (deep) cleaners, blowers, steam cleaners, carpet extractors, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the general maintenance of floors, restroom facilities, walls, carpets, and furniture, to include:
• Floor-pad holders (floor machines)
• Squeegees (floor machines)
• Belts, beater bars, hoses, filters (vacuums)
• Maintain “wet-battery”-operated (floor) equipment; change out water in MondoVap (dry-steam) machines; change out water in Eye Wash stations.
• Assist in records maintenance of appropriate (battery-operated) power equipment use and water-replacement in Eye Wash stations and MondoVaps.
• Polish/recondition cement/concrete floors.
• Remove finish (strip), recondition, polish, and refinish wood floors.
• May perform cleaning and related activities in areas within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment (such as blowers and pressure-washers) to remove debris, or sweeping sidewalks or stairs;
• May use shovels to remove snow; may distribute and apply de-icing chemicals and sand;
• May move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis;
• Perform related duties as required.

Requirements include:
• Physical ability to do required work;
• AND one year of experience in custodial or general maintenance work.
Additional requirements include:
• Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington and two years driving experience.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
