UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Facilities Construction (FC) is responsible for planning and execution of shop direct, multi trade and project managed construction/alteration work $90K and under. Skilled trades range from carpentry, painting and masonry, flooring, sign shop, finish carpentry, electrical, plumbing and sheet metal.
We have an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic 2.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, this position will perform journey level construction work in one or more trade disciplines. Work involves assisting in multi-trade shop work to back up trades staff as well as focusing on a specific shop trade where the position is assigned. The role requires a good working knowledge of multiple related skill fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, sheet metal and/or sign shop. The position works at the direction of a specific shop lead and is tasked by that lead to assist with other trades as needed.
Must be able to perform alterations/construction work with an understanding of code compliance, ADA requirements, and safely operate equipment and use trade-specific tools. This position operates as a general construction-type role, able to assist trade specific journey or perform basic construction and alterations tasks in a semi-skilled capacity.
Perform the following typical Construction tasks:
· General demolition work with understanding of all hazardous materials mitigation techniques
· Assist masonry and painting trades
· Installation of ceiling grids and ceiling tiles.
· Install doors and door closers
· General carpentry work such as installing framing, wall board, concrete forms, doors and windows
· Operate various power tools including hand and shop equipment in a skilled manner
· May assist, coordinate and/or work with other trades and journey level personnel
· Replace/install/retrofit lighting ballasts and lamps.
· Install electrical outlets, switches and fixtures including trim work
· Install Plumbing fixtures and devices
· Install metal and plastic signage, signposts, vinyl coatings, and operation sign shop equipment.
· Assist with sheet metal work fabrication and installations
· Clean equipment and shops, organize storage areas, assist with maintenance of construction shops equipment such as fume hoods, filters, strainers, drains, catch basins, and maintainable shop assets.
· Operate machinery such as forklifts and scissor-lifts. Load and unload materials and supplies.
· Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
· Keep supervisor informed of project status and work progress, required project materials and equipment.
· May instruct semi-skilled workers.
· Communicate and coordinate with other UW Facilities shops to facilitate work.
· Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (DS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
· Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, UW Facilities - Maintenance & Construction (M&C)
· Accountability Protocols (IAP). Support all management directives and the vision and values of UW Facilities - Maintenance & Construction (M&C).
· Participate in and follow through with UW Facilities - Maintenance & Construction (M&C) Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.
· Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:
OR full journey status in a union,
OR four years applicable work experience.
Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
