UWMC's Center on Human Development and Disability (CHDD) has an outstanding opportunity for a Full-Time (40 hours/week) MEDICAL ASSISTANT. CHDD programs provide assessment, training, and research of children & adults with or at risk for developmental disabilities, autism, genetic disorders and syndromes. Patients and families achieve enhanced quality of life through their experiences at CHDD.
Medical Assistants perform duties required to assist health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients such as preparation of patient and environment for treatment, assisting with completion of forms, providing patient education, assisting with patient scheduling and referrals, and clerical reception functions.
TYPICAL WORK
Provides direct patient care support to physicians by greeting patients and family members, obtaining vitals, height and weight and plotting on appropriate private growth grids. Recognizes and reports symptomalogy of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse and assists patients with completion of Review of Systems and Pain Assessment forms.
Completes direct patient care procedures and skilled assistance to providers according to level of education, certification, in keeping with UWMC policies and procedures and clinic’s protocols.
Performs basic laboratory examinations and venipunctures and recognizes and reports abnormal laboratory values and radiology reports to physician or nurse.
Transports patients and lab specimens.
Accurately and thoroughly documents provision of patient care in EpicCare in a timely manner.
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age.
Uses special sensitivity towards pediatric, frail adult, developmentally delayed and developmentally disabled patients.
Works well with caregivers and extended family members, providing clear and detailed information.
Provides accurate, appropriate, and culturally sensitive education to clinic patients.
Maintains an environment that respects the socio-economic, ethno-cultural, and lifestyle diversity of patients and staff.
Responds appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situations, and communicates in a timely and effective manner to the responsible providers.
Maintains records, completes and submits required reports in a timely manner.
Monitors patient flow in clinics to assure efficient clinic operations and offers suggestions for improvement.
Maintains infection control standards for exam/procedure rooms: cleans, disinfects, changes linen, etc.
Assists with completion of monthly and quarterly audit reports, such as infection control and environment of care.
Assists with duties including checking in patients and processing referrals as time allows.
Answers telephone calls in a professional manner, directs calls appropriately, refers patient problems appropriately, and documents actions in EPIC.
Maintains designated levels of supplies in specified areas and assists in the general maintenance of the patient care exam rooms in the clinic. Orders medical and clerical supplies, as requested.
Obtains up-to-date community resource information and provide this information to patients and families.
Participates in staff meetings in person and/or actively seeks to keep informed of information/idea sharing.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and functional under stressful situations.
Adheres to attendance standards.
Performs related duties as assigned.
