Harborview Medical Center's Emergency Department has outstanding opportunities for multiple 90% Part-Time (36 Hours/Week) MEDICAL ASSISTANTS. The shift will be a rotating/variable shift most likely three 12 hours shifts.
Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) in EMERGENCY SERVICES will assist the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; emergent procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the back desk activities (clerical/reception) for patient care in the Emergency Department. Support functions include transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; patient education; maintenance/set up of special equipment and complex clerical/reception functions. Participates in unit and selected departmental activities to promote effective problem solving and communication.
STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE
•Implements assigned tasks in an organized, timely fashion.
•Seeks assistance, if required, to provide safe patient care
•Maintains safety, cleanliness, and order in patient rooms, utility rooms, supply/storage rooms, exam rooms, and/or treatment rooms.
•Restocks and maintains supplies in patient rooms, removes used or excess equipment and supplies.
•Orders and stocks supplies in a cost effective manner.
•Cleans and maintains equipment.
•Assists in setting up special equipment (Ex: oxygen, pumps, suction, etc.)
•Removes from service faulty or damaged equipment and reports to appropriate personnel.
•Maintains and organizes equipment and supply systems that promote efficiency.
•Consistently interacts courteously with patient and family.
•Demonstrates respect for patient’s values, lifestyle, spiritual needs, and/or cultural diversity in all interactions.
•Protects confidentiality of written and verbal patient information according to policy and procedure.
•Under general supervision, assist health care professionals in the delivery of direct patient care in the Emergency Department.
•Prepare and stock exam rooms and patient treatment rooms in the Emergency Department area with medical and clerical supplies.
•Clean and maintain all equipment in patient exam and treatment rooms within the Emergency Department. Assist in setting up special equipment (Ex: oxygen, pumps, suction, etc.)
•Orient new patients and explain the role of the Medical Assistant. Escort patients to Emergency exam and treatment rooms or other destinations.
•Observe and document in the medical record the patient's physical and emotional condition and vital signs. Recognize emergent/urgent problems and provide basic screening.
•Respond to patient complaints and concerns by; listening to, documenting information and data from appropriate sources, composing report for review and resolution, and appropriately triaging patient complaints.
•Perform direct patient care such as wound irrigation, diagnostic testing (ECG, venipuncture), crutch walking/teaching.
•Recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse.
•Verify presence of medical records and x-rays prior and request existing records and x-rays as necessary.
•Perform procedures including ear irrigation, urethral catheterization, sterile dressing changes.
•Perform basic laboratory examinations, venipuncture, and 12-lead electrocardiogram including rhythm strips, pregnancy testing, and throat cultures.
•Recognize and report abnormal laboratory values and radiology reports or changes in patient condition promptly to physician or nurse.
•Refer patients to those who can give assistance if unable to meet the patient’s needs.
•Present portions of the pre- and post-procedure patient education sessions.
•Monitor patient flow to assure efficient ED operations.
•Complete billing documents verifying the correctness of charges and that diagnoses have been obtained, as well as respond to patient billing questions referring as necessary to appropriate source.
•Transport patients and lab specimens.
•Maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization in utility rooms and supply/storage rooms. Order, stock and maintain supplies in Emergency rooms, removes used or excess equipment and supplies.
•Remove from service faulty or damaged equipment and reports to appropriate personnel.
•Maintain a safe clinical environment and identifies and reports all unsafe patient care situations, including environmental hazards (electrical, chemical, etc.).
•Use Body Substance Isolation and follows OSHA and other regulatory standards.
STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
•Obtains documents and communicates data as delegated (Ex: vital signs).
•Communicates abnormal findings or changes in patient condition to the RN promptly.
•Performs patient scheduling and billing functions in an accurate and timely manner (if applicable).
•Performs clerical/computer duties in an accurate and timely manner.
•Performs non-invasive and invasive procedures within the scope of their licensure/registration.
•Provides safe/therapeutic care consistent with practice standards.
•Performs other unit/clinic tasks as needed.

•Attends and participates in inservices and continuing education programs.
•Attends and participates in unit meetings, committees, and/or projects; reads minutes if unable to attend.

•Supports staff by sharing knowledge and assisting them as requested.
•Reports illegal/unethical/unprofessional practice of any member of the health care team.

•Introduces self to patient and explains the role of the Medical Assistant. Offers assistance if patient look lost of confused. Escorts patient to their destinations when possible.

•Patients always take precedence over tasks. Asks patient at end of contact if there is anything else the patient needs.
•Provide additional service for those who have been inconvenienced or who may need special assistance. Contact the Patient Relations Office when appropriate.
