UWMC Medical Specialties has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, MEDICAL ASSISTANT. This position has significant back office responsibilities for the Hep C program including:
Assisting with serial lab monitoring of patients and lab results
Scheduling patients for imaging and appointments including labs as required by the treatment protocol of the Hep C medication
Staffing the Hep C phone line
Entering lab values in the MAX database and tracking results
Under general supervision, the Medical Assistant (MA) will assist the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; technical procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the front desk activities for patient care in the clinic. Tha MA participates in clinic and selected divisional activities to promote effective problem solving and communication.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinic Flow Activities
Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients
Maintain and use supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner
Prepare patient for care team by rooming patient, taking vitals, opening patient encounter related to multi-disciplinary visit, schedule urgent add-on testing and exiting patient from exam room
Initiate eCare and provide AVS (after visit summary)
Prepare medical record for clinic visit. Verify presence of medical records and diagnostic testing (lab work and images) prior to scheduled appointments, requesting existing records and x-rays as necessary
Assist with inpatient admissions as requested by care team
Pre-authorize necessary testing, call patients with appointment reminders for clinic and related testing, and call patients with normal test results
Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records) and PACS (electronic imaging). This includes but not limited to EpicCare requirements, visit summary, smoking cessation, medications, H&P, Allergies, referring providers and pharmacy location
Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual
Provide basic telephone screening per clinic protocols and recognize emergent/urgent problems and direct to the nurse or physician
Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information
Support physician providers and multi-disciplinary team members (4-6 in addition to the MD provider) per clinic needing support and coordination
Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team
Transport patients and lab specimens
Complete billing documents as appropriate
Schedule appointments for patients

Prepare patient for examination by the provider
Observe and document the patient’s physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the MEDICAL record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse
Perform delegated patient care activities/education in accordance with established standards of practice
Assist during patient examinations and procedures performed by health care professionals
Give injectable medications that have been registered with the WA State Department of Health when certified as a Healthcare Assistant and successfully completed the ACS study module and competency skills check

Promote and contribute to the development of our team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines
Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students

REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board;
OR
equivalent education/experience.
Legal Requirement:
Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
