CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
It may be necessary to work in other Department of Laboratory Medicine locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UWMC-Roosevelt, etc. |
The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for an evening shift, part-time (80%) Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Trainee. The person in this role will perform clinical laboratory tests used in the screening, diagnosing, and treating of pathological conditions.
On General Bench:
- Perform Coagulation testing such as PT, PTT, Thrombin Time, Fibrinogen, Ddimer assays and mixing studies when ordered on the STAR Max.
- Perform heparin contamination checks and removal protocols in accordance with SOP's.
- Perform Liquid anti-Xa testing for UF Heparin, LMW Heparin, Rivaroxaban Level, Apixaban Level, Chromogenic factor X, DTI and Dabigatran levels, Factor VIII and Factor IX levels when ordered on the STAR Max.
- Perform Platelet Function Screen assays on the PFA-100.
- Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Coagulation General Bench procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOPs.
- Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Coagulation General Bench instruments according to SOP's.
In OR Laboratory:
- Perform Thromboelastograph testing using TEG 5000 instruments. Transmit TEG tracings on select OR patients to their respective OR's.
- Perform Hematological analysis – Platelet counts and Hematocrits – using Sysmex KX21N instrument.
- Perform Limited Coagulation testing on STA-Compact, available in Satellite Laboratory.
- Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Satellite lab procedures requiring the running of Quality Control Material according to SOPS.
- Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Satellite Lab instruments according to SOP's.
Special Coagulation Bench:
- Perform Heparin Induced Platelet Antibody testing, Plasma Hemoglobin testing and other special or research assays as trained and according to SOPs using the BioTek Eon Plate Reader.
- Perform Platelet Aggregation studies on the ChronoLog, Whole Blood LumiAggregometer.
- Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all Special Coagulation Bench procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOPS.
- Perform Maintenance Procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Special Coagulation Bench instruments according to SOP's.
General Duties:
- Process and store Coagulation samples for various Coagulation Assays. Process and store samples for various Research Testing projects. (May include precipitations, multiple centrifugations, aliquotting plasma into vials and placing in appropriate freezers or refrigerators.)
- Enter patient and Quality Control Data into the LIS as needed. Notify Reference Lab Services to fax results as needed and follow SOP's to fax results to outside locations when Client Support Services is not available.
- Familiar with Departmental “Environment of Care” Policies, Work Place Safety Protocols, patient confidentiality policies, and all SOPs regarding departmental and divisional compliance and integrity in the workplace and CQI.
- Familiar and abillity to use the Coagulation Lab procedure manuals including the manual as they exist in Media Lab.
- Medical Laboratory Scientists may be asked to perform other more specialized Coagulation testing and test development as needed and in accordance with training.
- Perform testing on Proficiency testing materials when asked by the Coagulation MLS Lead or by the MLS2 and in accordance with departmental SOP's.
- Troubleshoot instrument issues, knowing when to call one of the groups that support the Coagulation lab like LabMed IT or Stago Support Hotline.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Hematology General Duties:
- Perform Hematological analysis using Sysmex XN instruments.
- Perform Hematological analysis such as differentials and smear scans using Cellavision and microscopes.
- Use SP-10s for slide making and staining or manually make and stain the slide. Use Cytospin to make body fluid slides.
- Use WAM 4.1.1 middleware to review Hematological results and conduct other checks prior to validation and submission of those results to the Lab Information System.
- Perform Quantitative and Qualitative analysis body fluid cells using microscopes and counting chambers.
- Familiar and ability to use the Hematology Lab procedure manuals including as they exist in Media Lab.
- Perform ESR's using the Excyte 20.
- Medical Laboratory Scientists may be asked to perform other more specialized Hematology testing (Such as Assist with the acquisition and processing of Bone Marrow samples) and test development as needed and as they are specially trained and licensed.
- Perform Maintenance procedures, daily, weekly and monthly, on Hematology instruments according to SOP's.
- Run and evaluate Quality Controls on all procedures requiring the running of Quality Control material, according to SOP's
- Perform testing on Proficiency testing materials when asked by the Hematology MLS Lead or by one of the MLS2s and in accordance with departmental SOP's.
- Troubleshoot instrument issues, knowing when to call one of the groups that supports the Hematology lab like LabMed IT or Sysmex’s TAC.
- Involved in training and teaching MLS program students and new employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Requirements for MLS Trainee:
Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience, AND Eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.
Requirements for MLS1:
Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience
AND
Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division.
AND, One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement.
