The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Medical Laboratory Scientist. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform clinical laboratory tests used in the screening, diagnosing, and treating of pathological conditions. Testing is performed at a professional level.
- Perform molecular testing of DNA or RNA extracted from peripheral blood, bone marrow, tissue (fresh, frozen, or paraffin-embedded), cellular body fluids, or stem cells.
- Process, test and analyze specimens or amplicons (from polymerase chain reaction procedures) on a variety of instruments.
- Prepare libraries, pool and load on MiSeq sequencing instrument, analyze data from instruments and enter results into computers.
- Understand technical knowledge appropriate to laboratory section. Master knowledge to perform all aspects of testing-processing samples, run samples on instruments, analyze results from instruments and enter data into computers.
- Understand and apply a working knowledge of the laboratory information system (LIS) and other computer systems.
- Assist in developing, following procedures and/or troubleshooting procedures and problems that may or may not include actual wet lab involvement, but requires a comprehensive understanding of laboratory testing gained from a foundation of medical laboratory science training and experience performing moderate to high complexity testing.
- Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance to laboratory instruments and related equipment.
- Assist in instruction and training of new employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, and students;
- Assist in the design, development and evaluation of new procedures/processes;
- Understand quality control requirements and apply this knowledge to validate test results.
- Perform laboratory work accurately.
- Organize and prioritize workload; use efficient workflow processes.
- Share knowledge by teaching students and training new employees.
- Share responsibility for emergency calls, overtime, call back, and holiday coverage.
- Perform other duties as required.
This position will be offered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee dependent upon the qualifications of the selected candidate.
REQUIREMENTS:
MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST TRAINEE:
Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Science certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology, with successful completion and certification within one year from date of hire. Failure of Medical Laboratory Science graduates to attain certification within one year of date of hire will result in a recommendation for termination.
MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST 1:
Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience, AND Current Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division, AND One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement.
DESIRED:
- Knowledge of molecular biology principles and standard molecular techniques, including:
(1) nucleic acid extraction
(2) qualitative and quantitative PCR
(3) agarose and capillary electrophoresis - Laboratory experience performing the above molecular techniques
- Knowledge of hematopoietic cancers and the molecular/genetic abnormalities common to these cancers
- Computer skills
- Demonstrate professional growth by attending professional meeting, seminars, lectures
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
It may be necessary to work in other Department of Laboratory Medicine locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UWMC-Roosevelt, etc.
