The Department of Radiation Oncology is an academic department specializing in the research, teaching, and providing of professional services for the management of cancer patients undergoing treatment using radiation therapy as the main modality of treatment. The department is an integral part of the Cancer Program at the University of Washington and a major contributor to the contribution margin of each of the seven centers at which we provide professional services: University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC); the Gamma Knife facility at Harborview Medical Center (HMC); the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA); the Radiation Oncology Suite on the Northwest Hospital Campus (SCCA@NWH); the Seattle Proton Therapy CVenter (SPTC); Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH); and the Seattle Puget Sound VA Medical Center, and SCCA Peninsula Cancer Center.
The Department of Radiation Oncology, Division of Medical Physics, has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Medical Physics Research Scientist to work in a team of medical physicists, radiation therapy technologists, dosimetrists and radiation oncology physicians to deliver the best possible radiation treatment to a varied patient load.
This position will be learning about and contributing to clinical medical physics duties such as: daily, monthly, and annual calibrations of existing equipment and commissioning of new equipment and treatment techniques, patient-related procedures such as quality assurance (QA) measurements and calculations for individual patient treatments, radiation therapy planning and plan QA, patient immobilization for treatment, shielding requirements, adherence to regulatory procedures, troubleshooting during treatment problems.
Responsibilities include:
• Performs patient-specific radiation measurements and calculations.
• Performs quality assurance tests of photon beam and mechanical characteristics of therapy equipment under the supervision of a qualified medical physicist
• Participates in research and development projects in collaboration with Medical Physicists.
• Maintains appropriate proficiency in the use of radiation treatment machines, radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and related software.
• Assists with radiation surveys of treatment rooms as required by the clinic's procedures and state and federal regulations.
• Assists, as required by a Medical Physicist, in the design of quality assurance procedures.
• Follows all medical physics quality assurance procedures and policies, and performs other duties as assigned.
• As required by the Supervisor, also participates in meetings, radiation safety operations, special task groups, and/or procedures in Radiation Oncology.
• Some patient contact is involved for consults to physicians about special treatment designs, dose measurements during treatment, special shielding designs. Access to patient medical records is necessary for treatment plan QA, and continuing weekly treatment QA.
Requirements include:
• Master's Degree in Physics, Medical Physics, or related field
• At least three months of working experience required.
• Some experience working with and maintaining complex scientific measurement instruments in a clinic/hospital environment or equivalent.
• Proficient use of PC personal productivity tools including e-mail, word processing and spreadsheets.
• Proven communication, planning, interpersonal and analytical skills.
• Must be capable of keyboard entry on computers and computer-controlled instrumentation.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
