The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. University of Washington's Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a Part-time (50% FTE), first shift, MESSENGER DRIVER. This position will drive a Motor Pool vehicle to transport laboratory specimens, laboratory reports, supplies and other designated materials between UWMC and medical facilities and laboratories within the greater Puget Sound region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintains integrity of specimens transported (frozen, refrigerated, room temperature)
  • Adheres to “universal precaution” procedures for transporting bio-hazardous materials
  • Prepares/gathers lab supplies and reports to be delivered to clients as requested
  • Carries a cellular phone and respond to calls promptly
  • Communicates in a professional and helpful manner with employees of medical facilities for which courier service is provided
  • Maintains a customer-service focus and attitude, regardless of situations encountered
  • Occasionally is required to decide on reasonableness of accommodating additional requests for service within assigned shift
  • Maintains appropriate records of deliveries and specimens transported
  • Keeps assigned Motor Pool vehicle clean, fuel tank sufficiently full, and maintenance up-to-date
  • Delivers lab supplies provided to clients
  • Other duties as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:
    Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

    DESIRED:
  • Experience handling bio-hazardous laboratory specimens and familiarity with universal precautions
  • Experience with customer service relations
  • Demonstrated success working independently with minimal supervision

  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • May work weekends and holidays
  • Will be required to carry specimen coolers and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Provision of a Wash. State Dept. of Licensing 5-year driving abstract
