UWMC Radiology has an outstanding opportunity for a part time temporary/hourly NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGIST 1. The person in this role performs clinical diagnostic examinations and procedures utilizing radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals. Produces high quality static, dynamic, and SPECT images of patient organ systems for general and cardiac nuclear medicine studies. Operates computerized imaging systems and other specialized equipment, such as thyroid uptake probe and well counter detector systems.
EQUIPMENT:
Camera Experience
•Able to independently perform QC requirements on all cameras
•Can independently perform Flow/SPECT/Dyn/Static Imaging on all cameras
•Can independently choose appropriate collimator and change collimators on all cameras
•Knowledge of camera physics (how gamma camera works)
•Able to troubleshoot camera problems
Radio-isotope principles
•Knowledge of half-lives and energy peaks.
•Knowledge of different types of radioactive emissions
Hot Lab
•Able to make all kits independently
•Demonstrates sterile technique in biosafety cabinet
•Able to manipulate around in PineStar and perform necessary hot lab tasks (draw dose, receive inventory, waste disposal, etc.)
•Calculates patient doses as per protocol; adjusts dose as per department SOP for pediatric patients.
Cardiac
•Can independently place ECG leads and set up Marquette for patient stress studies
•Able to determine if patient is adequately prepped
•Can independently perform (under MD or ARNT supervision) treadmill and pharmacologic stress tests
•Able to independently perform cardiac imaging, troubleshoot gating problems, motion correct, and merge studies)
General Nuclear Medicine
•Can independently perform common nuclear medicine studies (bone, VQ, renal, liver, etc)
•Can independently perform less common nuclear medicine studies (Octreo, MIBG, ProstaScint, etc)
•Able to process all Nuclear Medicine general and cardiac studies, including static, dynamic, gated and SPECT (with or without attenuation correction).
•Able to independently perform thyroid uptake measurements
•Can independently cover on-call assignments; perform all on-call patient procedures
•Consistently demonstrates good work flow management
IT/COMPUTER SYSTEMS/IMAGE MANAGEMENT:
•Begins, completes, and cancels exams in RIS as indicated
•Able to schedule on-call studies in RIS
•Knowledge of RIS and PACS to perform daily duties
•Documents any radiotracer and/or medications used during imaging in RIS
•Demonstrates knowledge in EPIC and ORCA
•Demonstrates knowledge of white board
•Ensure that all exams are billed properly
IMAGING/PATIENT CARE:
•Can independently place IVs
•Uses aseptic technique
•Able to independently perform necessary nursing care
•Able to safely administer approved non-radioactive medications as per departmental SOP
•Examines all orders for accuracy in determining if signs and symptoms match exam ordered and follows departmental protocols. Clarifies orders with ordering physician if necessary
•Explains study to the patient, appropriately questions patient for exam to be performed, instructs, and assists patients in proper positioning for the examination
•Selects equipment and settings to optimize the image for diagnostic purposes as described by UWMC protocol
•Exercises independent judgment and is able to tailor examination relative to patients clinical presentation and pathophysiological state
•Appropriately monitors and communicates with the patient during exam and is able to assess patient pain and notify proper personnel for intervention if necessary
•Practices proper room set-up and clean-up for all procedures
•Evaluates images for technical quality and accurate positioning
•Completes all examinations assigned in an efficient and timely manner without reduction in exam quality
•Performs work accurately and quickly even during peak workloads and maintains an acceptable volume of examinations as described by department policies
SAFETY:
•Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health errors
•Performs all quality control checks as prescribed and contacts the appropriate staff in the event of a system or equipment malfunction
•Follows all departmental policies regarding radiation safety
•Chooses and correctly labels all radiopharmaceuticals and medications under the direction of the Radiologist
•Appropriately questions patient regarding history, allergies, and pregnancy
•Applies appropriate orientation labels to all imaging
•Follows department protocols for all imaging studies
•Know basic CPR to assist in patient care
•Initiates and participates in all Final Verification/Time Out with all staff members present for any invasive procedures
Radiation Safety
•Knows how to handle radioactive materials
•Understands appropriate radiosafety precautions for different radio-isotopes (ex. Liquid Iodine)
•Can independently use different radiosurvey equipment (Geiger counter, mR meter)
•Can independently survey for contamination using a Geiger counter
•Demonstrates how to survey an incoming ammo can containing radioactive doses
•Can independently clean up a radioactive spill
•Able to independently clean and monitor an I131 therapy room
OTHER:
•Orient, educates, and provides a positive learning environment for students, trainees, technologists, residents, and fellows
•Completes annual educational requirements
•Maintains required certifications
•Helps others when necessary
•Consistently communicate effectively with staff and patients
•Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to independently use KRONOS timekeeping system and follows the Department's guidelines
•Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a program approved by the Joint Review Commission for Nuclear Medicine Technologists (JCRNMT) AND certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Nuclear Medicine
OR
equivalent education/experience.
