When there are openings, residency opportunities typically include medical-surgical areas such as Oncology, Telemetry, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, General Medicine, and Transplant. Residency opportunities are also periodically available in critical care, and you must apply separately to that the specific job posting when it is open.

What is the application process?

What areas hire residency RNs?
When there are openings, residency opportunities typically include medical-surgical areas with specialty patient populations such as cardiology, orthopedics, general medicine, transplant and oncology. Residency opportunities are also periodically available in Critical Care and Perioperative Nursing and you must apply separately to those the specific job postings when they are open.
When should I apply, and can I apply before I get my Registered Nurse License?
We recommend you apply during your final quarter/semester of your nursing program or later. You may apply before you are licensed, but you must hold an Active Washington State Registered Nurse license, or an Active Temporary Practice Permit prior to starting employment.
What should be included on my resume?
Your resume should include your entire education and work history, and provide information about your clinical experiences (topic of clinical, facility where completed, type of unit/department and number of hours) as well as your senior practicum/capstone experience. Do not feel restricted to one page, as our applicant tracking system does not have page parameters.
Do I need to include other work experience, even if it was not in a health care position?
Please include all work experience on your resume.
Can I submit a cover letter separately to you?
Cover letters are not needed as a part of the application process.

How many residency positions are available?
The number of residency positions varies throughout the year, depending on vacancies in the units, mix of current staff, and applications from experienced nurses in that nursing specialty.
If selected, when does the residency start?
We hire into residencies throughout the year, with orientation dates offered approximately twice a month. Some residencies, such as the ICU and OR, have specific start dates.
What is the status of my application?

How long until I hear from someone?
If there is an opportunity for you to interview, we will contact you. Otherwise, your application remains active in the candidate bank for future openings.
How long does my application stay active?

Does my application automatically roll over to the new candidate bank, or do I need to apply again?
Your application does not roll over to the new candidate bank. You will need to re-apply. This provides an opportunity for you to update your resume and assessments.
If I apply to the UW Medical Center candidate bank, does that mean that I am being considered for jobs at Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, Valley Medical Center, and UW Neighborhood clinics as well?
While Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital, Valley Medical Center and UW Neighborhood clinics are all under the UW Medicine umbrella, each hospital functions as a separate entity. Each hospital has its own hiring process for residency staff.
What does a typical Nurse Residency program at University of Washington Medical Center include?
Residency Program Includes:
• A precepted unit-based clinical orientation. You will receive one-on-one individualized orientation to your clinical unit with experienced RNs.
• Selected education opportunities by nursing specialty
• New Graduate Symposium: a four-day class series offered several times a year for new RN graduates. The symposium is designed to enhance competency in the following areas: critical thinking, prioritization, and delegation skills; PICC and central lines; patient and nurse safety; discharge planning; patient education resources on line; pain management and pain pumps; ostomy, skin and wound care; codes; and strategies to ensure successful transition to the professional RN role.
• Specialty consortium programs (ICU and OR).
• Immediate response conference.
• Computerized information system training: a computer class to orient you to the UWMC computerized information system for documentation.
The UWMC Nursing Residency Program Supports You to:
• Safely provide care for patients in the nursing specialty you have selected.
• Prioritize patient care based on acuity or urgency of patient need.
• Recognize and respond to emergency situations.
• Recognize abnormal assessment/data and know when to consult others.
• Administer medications in a safe and timely manner.
• Access patient education materials and on line resources.
• Coordinate care with the entire health care team.
• Communicate effectively with individuals and groups.
• Be part of a nursing team caring for patients at a renowned research and teaching medical center.
Upon completion of the RN residency program, you will continue to receive support from your management team, preceptor, clinical nurse specialists, and staff development specialists.
