The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Laboratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (80% FTE), evening shift, PHLEBOTOMIST.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection

Verify patient identity before performing collection

Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages

Instruct patients on proper collection of urine specimens

Perform laboratory-testing procedures such as Prothrombin time, and Whole blood glucose testing

Prioritize to work effectively in a fast paced clinical environment

Assist in the orientation and training of students and new employees

Support service and UWMC goals, service efficiency, and effectiveness through such activities as: participating in problem solving, demonstrating support for policies, sharing expertise, and contributing to project work and committees

Promote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments

Communicate clearly, directly and on a timely basis

Open to receiving direction and asking for assistance when needed

Keep abreast of safety procedures including fire plan, disaster drills, evacuation routes, etc.

Demonstrate a courteous, respectful, professional attitude, and behavior at all times

Perform related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduation AND completion of a phlebotomy course OR
equivalent education/experience.

Legal Requirement: Obtain State of Washington certification as a Health Care Assistant Level A within sixty days of employment date.

DESIRED:
Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy Certification with the Washington State Department of Health.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Will need to work holidays and weekends

Lab Medicine employees are considered essential staff and as such are required to report to work during inclement weather

Lab Medicine employees may be required to work in any of the department locations including but not limited to HMC, UWMC, Roosevelt, SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCH, etc.
