The University of Washington School of Oceanography operates two oceanographic research vessels: • R/V Thomas G. Thompson, owned by The Office of Naval Research, operated and maintained by UW under a Charter Party Agreement, and a UNOLS (University National Oceanographic Laboratory System) Global class research vessel in the U.S. Academic Research Fleet • R/V Rachel Carson, owned, operated and maintained by the UW and a UNOLS Local class research vessel in the U.S. Academic Research Fleet.
The School of Oceanography has an outstanding opportunity for a Port Engineer. The Port Engineer serves a critical role in enabling both vessels to conduct oceanographic research cruises in support of the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, NOAA, USGS, BOEM, NASA, and other governmental agencies as well as the University of Washington. The Port Engineer manages all engineering aspects of the maintenance and operation of the ships. The Port Engineer is the primary focal point for managing the ships’ maintenance as well as the operation of the ships’ engineering systems.
The Port Engineer provides essential logistical support for the ships so that they can carry out their science schedules regardless of where they operate and within demanding operating schedules especially for R/V Thomas G. Thompson that operates 260-300 days per year in support of science. The Port Engineer ensures the ships meet all the engineering requirements as enforced by regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping as well as other governmental entities when the ships operate in foreign waters. The Port Engineer also provides oversight and guidance for the engineering staffs for both ships. The Port Engineer reports to and is accountable to the Manager of Marine Operations in the School of Oceanography. The Port Engineer works in close concert with the Port Captain and the Supervisor of Shipboard Science Support to ensure the ships are fully prepared and capable to support science.
Responsible for overall condition and effective operation of all hull, mechanical, electrical, control, propulsion and auxiliary systems and equipment on both R/V Thomas G. Thompson and R/V Rachel Carson. This includes:
•Responsible for ensuring the R/V Thompson meets or exceeds all requirements set forth by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), National Science Foundation (NSF) and Office of Naval Research (ONR) as well as foreign entities when operating in foreign waters.
•Responsible for ensuring the R/V Carson meets or exceeds all requirements set forth by UNOLS.
•Responsible for ensuring both the R/V Thompson and R/V Carson receive all necessary shore-side support for safe and effective mission execution and meet or exceed all International Safety Management System (ISM) regulations and requirements.
•Responsible for 24/7 on-call logistical and technical support of both R/V Thompson and R/V Carson worldwide to include priority and emergency responses to critical systems or equipment failures as well as routine and constant logistical support such as sourcing, purchasing and delivery of necessary equipment, parts, support contractors, and fuel.
•Responsible to stay abreast of current technical and regulatory issues and ensure timely upgrading of the ships’ critical systems; as well as ensure technical compatibility and availability of supporting parts and technical expertise.
•Responsible to identify, compile and purchase equipment with long lead times to manufacture, secure and purchase. Items may include parts such as those required to support overhaul of propulsion thrusters that may required 1.5 years lead time.
•Responsible for the planning and management of shipyard availabilities and major maintenance periods including development of technical specifications, initiating contract development with UW Procurement Services, procurement of long lead time materials, serving as the Project Engineer and the Primary Point of Contact for shipyard / maintenance availabilities.
•Work with the Manager of Marine Operations to plan and schedule maintenance availabilities in conjunction with the UNOLS ship scheduling process.
•Responsible for identifying, populating, managing and updating the 5-year maintenance plan and accompanying Maintenance Operation Stabilization Account (MOSA).
•Provide direction to and conduct annual performance evaluations of the R/V Thompson Chief Engineer
•Develop annual maintenance, engineering spares and special tools budgets for R/V Thompson and R/V Carson.
Support the Manager of Marine Operations as needed including:
•Advise the School of Oceanography Manager of Marine Operations on all aspects of operating R/V Thompson and R/V Carson especially with regard to engineering and logistical support including oversight and coordination with ships’ engineering departments.
•Provide input on ship scheduling and annual operating budget development.
•Assist in Marine Operations policy development.
•Assist in long term planning for ship operations, science cruise, support and upgrades.
•Assist with port operations (i.e. moorage of vessels, arranging logistics as may be needed. coordinating vessel fueling operations, shipping supplies, etc.), and any other vessel operations issues that may be necessary.
•Manage the Oceanography Dock

REQUIRED:
•Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, technology, or related field
•Minimum four years of related experience.
•Experienced mariner that has served as a USCG Licensed Chief Engineer – Unlimited
•Valid USCG Unlimited Chief Engineer’s license
•Valid US Passport
•Valid US driver’s license
•Ability to obtain a UW Forklift Operator Certificate
•Basic computer skills / experience including MS Office, email, internet research, web based maintenance & procurement systems
•Effective oral and written communication skills
•Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
