UW Bothell - First Year and Pre-Major Program has an outstanding opportunity for a Pre-Major Academic Advisor.

The Pre-Major Academic Advisor provides integrative advising for Pre-major students at UW Bothell. This individual will work in a collaborative team to support over 1,400 students in academic planning, degree path exploration, applying to their major of choice, and various student success strategies. This position is integral to our students’ success.
Working closely with the advising leadership and staff, the person who holds this position focuses on integrative academic advising, but will also collaborate with Admissions, Student Life, and other academic programs on campus.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Advising:
o Advise and assist students, with a strong emphasis on first-and second-year student issues and programming.
o Assist in understanding pre-requisites and process of applying for majors, ensuring academic planning is consistent with timely completion of pre-requisites for major.
o Evaluate student transcripts and course records and advise students in the selection of appropriate courses for their intended major.
o Monitor academic progress and assist students in developing an academic plan to improve their standing when on low scholarship.
o Provide interpretation and explanation of college and university degree policies and procedures.
o Maintain confidentiality of the students records.
o Provide referrals to university student support offices and additional resources as needed.
o Maintain student records, files and databases while maintaining confidentiality and abiding by FERPA laws.
o Assist with first-year and transfer orientation preparation, presentations and academic planning sessions.
Outreach:
o Collaborate in designing and maintaining outreach programs and events for diverse students.
o Serve as a liaison to specified offices and committees.
o Represent and promote UW Bothell and First Year and Pre-Major Programs at internal and external meetings, events and other activities, and occasionally make presentations when appropriate.
o Assist in the preparation of print information, web content and statistical reports.
o Other duties as required or assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
o Bachelor’s Degree in education, or counseling or related field.
o Foundational background in student services, with a minimum of two years of experience in advising, counseling, mentoring, or academic coaching at the college or university level.
o Demonstrated ability to form productive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds
o Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent student services in a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.
o Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen actively, empathize, and provide reflective feedback
o Demonstrated ability to maintain a consistently positive and objective approach to student service.
o Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service and effective communication skills.
o Proficiency with computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various web applications.
o Demonstrated organizational skills, including attention to detail and documentation, ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, ability to gather and analyze information skillfully, and comfort and efficacy in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
o Demonstrated collaboration skills, including a learning mindset open to new approaches and ideas, ability use reason when dealing with emotional topics, and be thorough in communication and documentation
o Demonstrated project management skills, including ability to meet deadlines, manage time and resources effectively, and develop priorities amid simultaneous competing and changing projects.
DESIRED
o Ability to teach academic skills to students
o Ability to integrate academic advising and career development issues when assisting student in formulating academic plans
o Knowledge of the needs of 1st generation college students from diverse backgrounds
o Experience working with exploring and at-risk students
o Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population including low-income, first-generation, students of color, international, veteran, LGBTQI, and differently abled students
o Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours as assigned
o Knowledge of the University of Washington policies and procedures, student admissions, and student tracking tools such as the Student Database and EARS.
o Knowledge of UW Bothell majors and curriculums.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
o This position requires a flexible schedule and the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
