The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL-UW was formed in 1943 for the U.S. Navy to bring university research resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. APL has an outstanding part time, 50% FTE opportunity for a Principal Investigator.
This position is a Principal Investigator (PI) for the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL or Laboratory). The PI will help lead a research program that includes Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sponsored research in the basic, applied, and advanced technology development categories at the unclassified and classified level. This research includes combining efforts from several disciplines to field operational platforms designed to detect and classify objects.
This position will hold both strategic leadership and daily operational responsibilities for this research program, including:
Fund raising activities
Research activities
Project management activities
REQUIREMENTS:
Doctoral degree in Engineering or Science. Equivalent experience cannot substitute for degree requirement.
Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:
Advanced post-graduate education in aspects of acoustical physics and engineering.
At least 10 years of job-related experience, including:
Prior experience and success as a Principal Investigator.
Established history of successful fund-raising, project execution, and publications.
High-level understanding of ocean and target acoustics as well as unmanned and remotely operated systems.
A federal security clearance is required to hold this position.
Knowledge, skills and abilities that are desirable, providing for an enhanced level of job performance, include:
At least 20 years of experience as a PI in research laboratory setting (government or private).
Management skills and academic advising experience.
