The Department of Health Services has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Professional Development Specialist. This position is part of the team supporting the Graduate Program in Health Services Administration (HSA). This position works to implement the comprehensive set of professional development and advising activities for the Master of Health Administration program (in-residence MHA). The Professional Development Specialist will be the dedicated specialist for the in-residence MHA program, advising students on program curriculum and facilitating the placement of students in successful mentor relationships, internships and capstone projects. In collaboration with the Program’s faculty leadership, the Professional Development Specialist is responsible for facilitating networking and other professional development opportunities between students and faculty, alumni, mentors and professionals in the regional healthcare community. This position will balance direction coming from multiple leadership sources while reporting to the Associate Director for Program Operations in Health Services Administration.
This position will work towards diversity goals related to admissions and student support and will be expected to know and work toward the strategic goals of the Program, the Department and the School of Public Health. Additionally, the Professional Development Specialist will use independent judgment in interpreting and applying the rules and regulations of the Program, the Department of Health Services, and the University of Washington.
The UW Master of Health Administration (MHA) Programs (including the in-residence and the Executive MHA degrees) are among the nation’s top programs for health services administration. Increasingly, our competitive advantage for obtaining high caliber students depends on successfully preparing our graduates for entry into mid- and top-level management and leadership roles. The Professional Development Specialist plays a critical role in producing this outcome in our programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Student Professional development and (academic) advising – 50%
•Develop and deliver a comprehensive and coordinated program of professional development activities over the two years of the program. Work closely with faculty to ensure that this program is integrated into the curriculum, research, and other educational activities and initiatives.
•Advise current MHA students on a wide range of professional development areas including researching and securing internships and fellowships, finding mentors, building skills, identifying job opportunities, preparing for case competitions, etc.
•Develop and disseminate career development resources (regional/national health systems, networking, jobs listings, skill development opportunities, conferences, etc.).
•Work with Practitioner-in-Residence to identify opportunities for individual students’ professional development, define individual development plans and introduce resources related to students’ areas of professional interest.
•Coordinate faculty advising including assigning advisors, convening regular advisor meetings, and identifying and sharing resources and coordinate information-sharing to support best practices.
•Manage mentor program that recruits mentors and facilitates matching of professional mentors with current students.
•Manage internship program that solicits local and national opportunities to match with students’ areas of interest.
•Manage fellowship program that solicits and researches local and national opportunities to match students with organizations.
•Support MHA students requiring academic support (e.g., tutoring) or individual study plans (concurrent degree students, returning students, students planning to go on-leave, etc.).
•Partner with practitioner-in-residence to develop opportunities for MHA students to interact with EMHA cohorts for networking, internships, informal mentorship and additional professional workshop/seminars.
•Act as a staff liaison for MHA Student Association.
Program administration
•Alternating with the EMHA Professional Development Specialist, facilitate quarterly Student Progress Committee meetings.
•Recommend policy and procedures related to MHA program administration.
•Review and monitor evaluations and petitions (course waivers, capstone, internships, mentor program, degree warrants, etc.).
•Coordinate requests for faculty letters of recommendation in support of fellowship and internships.
•Collaborate with HSA and departmental staff on nominations for student awards and efforts to secure funding.
•Plan and facilitate annual capstone presentations.
•Track budget activity; report to associate director.
•Provide support for alumni relations and alumni database in collaboration with the Alumni Association and the Marketing and Recruitment Specialist.
•Provide continuous assessment and recommendations for improvement of programming activities.
•Develop and compile various reports including student progress and planning documents and reports.
Community engagement
•Act as liaison between the MHA students, Program leadership, and regional and national health services organizations, health systems, and professional associations.
•Research and solicit potential internships and mentors from within local, regional and national health services community and act as advocate for compensation and housing for student internships.
•Develop community relations with underrepresented community health partners for recruitment and internship opportunities.
•Work with faculty to facilitate additional practice community exposure with regional and national health organizations and across SPH disciplines.
•In conjunction with the Program’s Director and Associate Director, work actively to increase the number of students placed in national internship/fellowship.
•Create and maintain direct pipelines with national health organizations for employment placement.
•Engage with and solicit alumni and practice community to participate in MHA student activities/workshops/events.
•Collaborate with capstone faculty soliciting capstone projects with local healthcare organizations that match students interests and talents.
•Travel to health care administration conferences, as needed
Event planning and facilitation
•Plan and facilitate annual orientation, mentor/student mixer, annual appreciation luncheon, and other related events; advise and support student committee in planning graduation event.
•Develop and manage the guest lecture series.

Requirements:
•Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four years’ experience advising students in a higher education setting
•Strong desire to mentor students and commitment to working effectively with a diverse student body
•Ability to work productive and independently in a fast-paced environment; strong initiative and follow-through
•Strong project management skills and the ability to multitask over a variety of projects
•Strong attention to detail
•Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
•Strong adaptable writing skills: ability to communicate in diverse written formats and mediums, as well as to tune messages for a wide variety of audiences
•Ability to work both independently with limited supervision and as part of a team
•Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships and build strong professional networks
•Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, cloud-based tools (such as Google Apps, SharePoint, etc.), electronic calendaring systems
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired Qualifications:
•Master’s degree in career counseling, health care administration, student services or related fields
•Professional experience working with a graduate program at the University of Washington or another top-tier institution of higher education
•Experience working with UW administrative systems
•Professional experience interacting with health care organizations in the Puget Sound region and/or familiarity with studies and career in healthcare
•Career development experience
•Event planning experience
Environmental Conditions:
This position may require occasional evening and weekend work. Some regional and/or national travel may also be required.
