UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for six consecutive years.
The Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) protects the integrity and excellence of vertebrate animal research and teaching at the University of Washington by providing comprehensive resources and outstanding services to the UW Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), faculty, staff, and other partners for navigating and complying with the regulations regarding use of vertebrate animals. OAW provides direct support to the IACUC and is responsible for management and pre-review of animal use protocols, congruence review between protocols and grants, oversight of on-going studies (post-approval monitoring), monitoring of animal use facilities, preparation and submissions of all regulatory and accreditation reports, and the design, delivery and tracking of animal use training.
OAW is seeking a customer service-oriented, computer-savvy individual to fill a multi-faceted role helping drive continuous improvement in OAW operations. You will provide expertise and lead OAW's use of SharePoint/Office 365 to support both internal and external access to information. You will help support OAW business processes within our electronic IACUC system, HoverBoard. You will take responsibility for proper computer connections with and operation of Sensaphone and other monitoring systems in animal housing spaces. And you will drive automation of other business processes, such as the review of grants for congruence with animal use protocols, including potential integration points between HoverBoard and other OAW and UW systems.
OAW has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Operations Analyst, OAW Technology.
The UW has made an enterprise commitment to SharePoint/Office 365. OAW has or is in the process of establishing in SharePoint its file storage, internal and external websites, and various office management functions. You will assume leadership of this ongoing effort, applying your knowledge and experience in SharePoint site creation, development, and administration to envision the future and lead and train other OAW staff. Additionally, you will cooperate with partner UW departments, including but not limited to the Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) and the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC), working to ensure animal care and use information is up-to-date and readily accessible to the UW research community regardless of its department of origin.
As part of OAW's HoverBoard team, you will coordinate closely with our vendor and the UW Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS) on upgrades, changes, and problems. After becoming expert in the system, you will be responsible for answering functionality questions from users within OAW and across the UW research community; troubleshooting and filing trouble tickets and support cases with the vendor; attending product meetings; planning and implementing roll-outs of improvements, updates and fixes; and writing test cases and supervising testing of upgrades and changes to the system. You will also help represent the UW's experience, needs, and ideas to the vendor and the wider community of system users.
You will drive the effort to replace current analog environmental monitoring systems with digital alternatives in certain animal use spaces. You will work closely with partners in the Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM), the Washington National Primate Center (WaNPRC), and UW Facilities and Maintenance to ensure proper operation of the systems. You will troubleshoot and maintain OAW computer connections to the systems, maintain callout lists, and test, calibrate, and help install Sensaphone equipment. You will also calibrate hygrothermometers, take periodic light level readings, coordinate quarterly pest inspections, and maintain maps for accessing animal spaces.
OAW has been tasked by the UW to provide review and assurance of congruence between grants and the animal work that they fund. While OAW Scientific Reviewers perform this congruence review, you will work to increase automation of the grant intake, routing and tracking processes and to integrate them with UW electronic systems, including HoverBoard, coordinating closely with the UW Office of Sponsored Projects and ORIS.
OAW operates by matrix management and, in addition to the above, you will be an active participant in strategic planning, project-focused teams, and daily operations to ensure the success of our mission.
