The Brotman Baty Institute (BBI) for Precision Medicine was co-founded by collaborative agreement between the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. BBI’s mission is to take advantage of Seattle’s unique ecosystem and collaborative culture towards having a transformative impact on biomedical research and patient outcomes with precision medicine. BBI works at the intersection of technology development and medicine in areas including medical genetics, cancer biology, infectious disease and technology development.

The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine also supports the Seattle Flu Study (SFS), now also known as the Seattle Coronavirus Assessment Network (SCAN), whose goal is to monitor and understand the movement of influenza, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and other respiratory pathogens within the city of Seattle.

BBI has an outstanding opportunity for a Project Manager to manage and support the following internal and inter-institutional programs:

BBI Working Groups: BBI faculty members identified key research areas ripe for maximal impact in advancement of precision medicine, and created faculty working groups around these areas to organize their work. The Project Manager will work with the BBI Administrative Director to support these working groups and their faculty leadership. Projects may include managing research programs funded by the faculty group, assisting in organizing and writing white papers, and planning/leading regular faculty meetings.  This project manager will ideally have a background in a basic science field to maximize their ability to support basic science and clinical faculty (50%).

BBI Granting Programs: BBI grants well over $1 million per year in research grants to its membership across UW, Fred Hutch, and Seattle Children’s. Many of these grants are administered to faculty collaborations across two or more institutions. The BBI Project Manager will assist the Administrative Director in managing the annual application and review process, the award of funding to grant winners, the assessment and project reports from faculty mid-grant, and the financial management required to ensure appropriate use of BBI funds for intended purposes. This Project Manager should have a strong background in budgetary oversight, as well as exceptional organizational ability to effectively manage this inter-institutional program (25%).

BBI Event Planning: BBI hosts national and international scientific meetings multiple times per year. The Project Manager will be responsible for helping to plan and organize all aspects of BBI symposia. This person should be comfortable working with faculty in setting and creating an agenda, then leading the logistical and planning aspects of inviting and hosting a scientific meeting. Prior experience hosting and planning large events and meetings is a plus, including managing the event budget (25%).

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct supervisory responsibilities are not required, however close communication with public relations, finance and support staff will be required.

Requirements include:

• Bachelor’s degree in a basic science, biology, engineering or related field.
• 2+ years’ experience in Project Management or management within an organization with complex logistical requirements, especially in life science research-related fields.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


• Extensive experience managing and developing budgets and contracts for large-scale multi-million dollar projects, especially within the life sciences.
• Experience with event planning.
• Excellent oral communication skills, high-level organization, leadership ability, and the flexibility to work in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. 
• Excellent written communication skills, including demonstrated competency in preparation of correspondence and reports.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a busy work environment with competing priorities.
• Ability to solve problems independently and also work as part of a team. 
• Ability to present data in a clear, logical, appropriate format for a range of target audiences.
• Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
• Experience managing programs, including monitoring of budgets and work plans against progress.

Conditions of Employment:

• Local travel required for some on-site management at partner institutions.
• Typical daily office hours, with occasional work outside normal business hours.
