Psychiatric Advanced Practice Provider/Clinical Nurse Specialist
RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Professional Development and Nursing Excellence
SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Director of Professional Development & Nursing Excellence, the Psychiatric Advanced Practice Provider/Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical expertise to patients and their families, is a resource person for health care providers, and participates in research and teaching programs. Advanced Practice Provider work is performed with general independence and decision-making responsibility under the general guidance of the attending physicians, chief resident, clinical lead APP, and Director of Professional Development & Nursing Excellence. Guidelines include general policy, procedures, and practice guidelines established by the department and Harborview Medical Center.
Standards of Performance (clinical skills where applicable to practice setting)
1. Documentation – documents pertinent findings & diagnostics on chart and/or in dictation, completes Pro Fee sheet appropriately
2. Accuracy – orders appropriate diagnostic tests
3. Thoroughness – follows through with diagnostic tests
4. Follow-up – makes discharge referrals appropriately
5. Prescribing – prescribes appropriate medication on an individualized basis
6. Specialty Consults – requests appropriate specialty consults
7. Ancillary Consultation – orders PT, OT, Diabetic Education, etc., appropriately
8. Dictation – does dictation in a timely manner
9. Transcription – reads, signs, and requests edit of transcription in a timely manner
10. Attending Consultation – seeks consultation by attending physician appropriately
11. Procedures – performs suturing, line placement, lumbar puncture appropriately
12. Admissions – consults with appropriate admitting team and completes paperwork
13. Clinical Lab – uses lab resources appropriately
14. Neatness – keeps work area clean, cleans lab resources after using
15. Productivity – see an appropriate number of patients in a shift
16. Use of Time – uses time at work in job related activity
17. Students – shares knowledge base with students in clinic training

Department Specific Knowledge/Skills Requirements
Under the oversight of the Director of Professional Development and Nursing Excellence, and with input from the Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Pscychiatry:
• Works as a member of the Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service to consult on behavioral health patients on medical-surgical units.
• Provides education to medical-surgical nursing staff for behaviorally challenging patient situations based on the assessed learning needs of the staff. Examples of staff education include: coaching, role-modeling, and informal/formal training.

Behavioral Health Education
1. Serves as a behavioral health resource for inpatient medical surgical units at Harborview Medical Center
2. Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to develop care plans for patients with challenging behaviors; participates in Extreme Team meetings for patients with challenging behaviors and/or behavioral health issues.
3. Provides direct support of staff, patients, and families in education and care continuum needs related to behavioral health
4. Functions as a liaison with the psychiatry consult team and the inpatient primary team and nursing staff
5. Provide consultation to other Mental Health Practitioners and nurses as needed.
Healthcare Team Development and Education
1. Aligns self with other operational educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists to ensure coordination and collaboration of educational initiatives directed at staff/faculty outside of PCS.
2. Promotes and supports a high functioning environment that fosters continual learning and professional development.
3. Utilizes innovative methods to teach, communicate, and disseminate behavioral health practices to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes.
Systems Resource
1. Utilizes principles of Continuous Quality Improvement to identify areas for system improvement in behavioral health practices and patient safety.
2. Consults and collaborates with members of the healthcare team on unit and service initiatives related to behavioral health and patient safety.

Masters Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing;
AND
Washington State Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License with prescriptive privileges;
AND
National certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
DESIRABLE:
Psychiatric specialty experience and certification.
