UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for six consecutive years.
The purpose of this 80% FTE position is to provide research coordination for the Specialized Clinical Pain Research Center (“UW Pain Hub”). The research coordinator will facilitate the development and maintenance of research infrastructure and the initiation of clinical research projects in Pain at UW core clinical sites (UWMC, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Harborview Medical Center, and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance). This position will liaise with spoke clinical sites to conduct early phase clinical trials in pain through NIH’s Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative’s Early Phase Pain Investigations Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net).
The goal of EPPIC-Net is to enhance the treatment of acute and chronic pain and reduce the reliance on opioids by accelerating early-phase clinical trials of non-addictive pain treatments. The network consists of a Data Coordinating Center (DCC), Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), and 12 specialized clinical centers (SCCs). University of Washington, spearheaded by investigators in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, was selected to be one of the network’s SCCs (UW Pain Hub).
The Research Coordinator will work in collaboration with co-investigator (Dr. Dale Langford) and under supervision of the multiple PIs. Major duties for this position include:
The Research Coordinator will perform clinical research tasks including recruiting and interviewing of human subjects, preparing human subject applications and preparing progress reports. Additionally, they will also coordinate data collection and recording for multiple research projects. This position will assist with developing strategies for accurate data tracking and management, and communicate with the DCC and CCC as necessary.
While this is a beginning level for a Research Coordinator, the successful candidate requires strong communication and organization skills and have the ability to quickly learn new skills (e.g., pain assessment techniques, master contracts, human subjects research, clinical trial initiation, data quality assurance). This position must exhibit a high level of professionalism and maturity as the individual will interact with other UW faculty and staff, as well as external institutions and community members.
The “Helping to End Addiction Long-term” (HEAL) Initiative is funding $945 million in 375 funding awards to researchers in 41 states. The surge in opioid prescriptions has fueled an addiction crisis that has taken more than 400,000 lives over the past 20 years. This position will be an important part of the UW Pain Hub Steering Committee including multiple Principal Investigators, Co-Investigators, and the Pain Division Chief. The success of UW Pain Hub within EPPIC-Net will result in more incoming NIH-funded early phase pain trials and may result in positive publicity for the university as we work to reduce reliance on opioids.
