The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for Clinical Supervisors.
Position Purpose:
The Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Prevalence Study (MDPS) is a research effort to understand how many adults in the United States have mental and substance use disorders. This study is led by RTI International with partners at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute, Duke University, Harvard University, the Treatment Advocacy Center, the University of Chicago, and the University of Washington. The MDPS is a cooperative agreement to RTI by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the Department of Health and Human Services. with partners at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute, Duke University, Harvard University, the Treatment Advocacy Center, the University of Chicago, and the University of Washington. The MDPS is a cooperative agreement to RTI by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the Department of Health and Human Services.
Position Complexities:
This position is responsible for the supervision of clinical interviewers and accuracy of data collection for household and non-household cohorts. Household data collection. The MDPS household sample will include approximately 6,000 clinical interviews. These interviews will be completed by video conference, telephone, or in person. Study team staff will identify eligible respondents in households in chosen areas across the country and selected adults will be asked to complete a short screening instrument. This screening instrument will help the study team identify individuals at risk for mental and substance use disorders to prioritize for a clinical interview. Non-household data collection. In prisons, homeless shelters, state psychiatric hospitals, and jails, facility records will be used to identify potential respondents. Clinical interviews will be completed with approximately 333 hospitalized patients residing in state psychiatric hospitals, 833 homeless individuals residing in shelters, 714 adults residing in federal/state prisons, and screening interviews with approximately 300 adults residing in jails. These individuals will be invited to complete a clinical interview upon their release from jail. Clinical interviews with individuals residing in these non-household settings will be conducted in person.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:
Mental and substance use disorders are significant public health problems with substantial unmet treatment need. Despite calls for improved estimates of these problems, critical methodological gaps remain. Two gaps are particularly important: the lack of accurate estimates of the most seriously impairing disorders in household populations, such as schizophrenia; and the exclusion of the incarcerated, homeless, and hospitalized non-household populations from national estimates. The MDPS is designed to fill these gaps. The study will include interviews conducted by clinicians to assess complex and impairing disorders. Interviews will be conducted from (1) a national household sample; (2) a national sample of incarcerated individuals in federal/state prisons; and (3) samples of individuals residing in homeless shelters, state psychiatric hospitals, and jails in a large urban area, a more rural community, and a suburban metropolitan region. Seattle has been selected as the suburban metropolitan region for this study.
Responsibilities:
Supervises a team of 6-8 Clinical Interviewers during the 15 month data collection period. Duties include:
Lead Responsibilities:

The Clinical Supervisor will lead monthly group meetings to discuss various modes of interviewing (NETSCID, standard SCID on paper) and respond to interviewer questions to ensure accurate data collection. Supervisor will be available to interviews when they are in the field during early or after 5 p.m. hours. May travel to data collection sites to assist in interviewing and troubleshooting issues that arise. Supervisors may assist in scheduling interviewers and in requesting travel arrangements or schedules for interviews out of the area (i.e. state hospital in Spokane). Meets with PI, study manager and support staff to report on monthly goals and any issues that arise; completes reports.
