The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 200 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $35 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator.
Position Purpose:
Position involves being an integral support to research conducted by faculty in the SMART Center group in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The position includes supporting research activities and community outreach, particularly as applied to research on school and community-based behavioral health programs for children, adolescents, and families. The Research Coordinator (RC) will primarily support a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded project through assisting with the development of research and data collection methods, and strategies for data management. Efforts include the coordination of multiple data collection activities which may include collaborating with and coordinating with community agencies and institutions. Duties include leadership and oversight of recruitment and interviewing of human subjects, preparing human subject applications, writing and editing technical reports and manuscripts for publication or presentation, monitoring project budgets and preparing progress reports/proposals for funding agencies. The RC serves as a liaison between the project team and research project partners within the UW and in the community, including mutiple school districts and community partners across Washiton State and in other states. This position has a high degree of responsibility for implementing research and project goals. In addition, the position must address complexities of community outreach, recruitment, team development and work with numerous Principal Investigators and junior faculty. Specifically, the position will coordinate the activities of the Beliefs and Attitudes for Successful Implementation in Schools (BASIS) project, under the direction of Aaron Lyon. BASIS is a randomized controlled clinical trial designed to simultaneously test the effect of a trauma-focused intervention in schools on student outcomes and the impact of a brief, group-based implementation strategy that is designed to augment standard evidence-based treatment (EBT) training and consultation for school-based clinicians.
This position has a high degree of responsibility for implementing research goals. The position must understand and be able to intervene in the complexities of mental health research such as participant recruitment, human subject protection, field staff hiring and training, research data quality assurance, grant writing and implementation, translation of research aims into field methods, and staff reorganization for different phases of research project. The position must also understand the complexities associated with conducting mental health research in the public school setting with participants from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, the position must address complexities of participant families, such as family conflict, child abuse, adolescent suicide, depression, disruptive behavior, and learning disorders. Work with numerous Principal investigators and junior faculty; manage IRB requirements; Database building, management and training of staff who utilize them; Presentation of data to analysts; Trouble shooting: study problem identification and problem solving solutions; Liaison to a number of community and national partners.
Responsibilities:
Research Project Coordination 70%:
Takes a lead role on the coordination of one or more school-based research or technical projects with community partners, including the development and monitoring of research procedures; responsibility for quality assurance systems to accomplish research goals; contribution to the analysis of research study results and the preparation of reports for review boards, funders and publication. Coordinate and participate in study recruitment, scheduling and human subject activities (interviews, focus groups, electronic surveys) and participation in the study. Monitor workflow for field activities; serve as primary contact for research assistants regarding field activities.
Data management 20%:
Sets up data management system for assigned projects; Coordinates multiple data collection efforts which include collaborating agencies or institutions. Ensure timely data entry and cleaning and use statistical and database management programs to analyze data and prepare summary narrative reports, graphs, tables, charts and illustrations;
Community Liaison 10%:
Establish and maintain contact with community agencies, health care providers, school districts, and/or study sponsors; inform sponsors of current status of research; act as a liaison between the project team and research project partners and funding agencies.
