The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) has existed since 1977 for the purpose of fostering research collaboration between UW and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). JISAO’s research is at the forefront of investigations on climate change, ocean acidification, fisheries assessments, and tsunami forecasting.
JISAO has an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist I: Acoustics as part of the Mekong Acoustics project. The purpose of this project is to establish near-real time monitoring of fish density in the Tonle Sap River, Cambodia to enable quantification of migration trends and estimates of fishing mortality .
The Research Scientist Engineer I conducts research in support of this project. This individual intermittently participates in fieldwork on the Tonle Sap River in Cambodia to install and establish monitoring routines of migrating pelagic fish.
Primary research activities include:
REQUIRED:
•A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries Science or related field
•Three months to one year of related work experience
•Training and familiarity with active acoustics theory
•Demonstrated experience operating scientific echosounders
•programming experience in R
•demonstrated experience working on boats and scientific fieldwork
•demonstrated experience in fish taxonomy
•ability to communicate with research team
•experience and willingness to work in remote locations
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
•Programming experience in Python
•Experience with Linux operating system
•Experience integrating hardware and software to form data acquisition instrument packages
•Experience with Echoview acoustic processing software
•Experience working in diverse cultures
