UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for four consecutive years.
The Department of Immunology has grown to include 33 faculty, ~30 graduate students and more than 70 post-doctoral trainees. We are a strongly interactive group and share the view that the immune system provides an unparalleled platform from which to study processes common to all of mammalian biology, processes unique to host defense, and processes of clear and immediate importance to the understanding and amelioration of human disease.
The Department of Immunology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1
Parasitic worms (helminths), allergens, and certain protists all induce a “type 2” immune response that causes increased mucus production (runny nose), smooth muscle hypercontractility (coughing & sneezing), and other changes in tissue function. Why the immune system treats all of these triggers the same way remains unclear. To address this and other questions, research in the Moltke lab focuses on the initiation of type 2 immunity. In particular, we are studying specialized cells in the intestinal lining called tuft cells. We and others recently discovered that tuft cells detect the presence of worms in the intestine using the same proteins that taste buds use to detect food. The lab seeks to uncover just how tuft cells “taste” worms and what happens after worm detection. Our findings should inform the development of improved therapies for asthma, allergy, and related disorders.
Job Description:
The Moltke and Tait Wojno labs have a shared job opportunity for a motivated Research Scientist 1 who will help manage the day-to-day operation of both labs and assist lab members with experiments. He/she will perform a variety of tasks to support research in the lab, including maintenance of a mouse colony and ordering of lab supplies. The Research Scientist is expected to use established systems/approaches to solve well-defined problems with a limited number of variables and few complex features. As time allows, the Research Scientist will also conduct experiments and tests in the immunology field that include making measurements and recording data. He/she will work under limited supervision, contribute data for use in reports and publications, and is expected to participate in regular laboratory meetings and events. The successful candidate will translate clear expectations regarding time management and task prioritization into efficient support for two growing research teams.
Tasks and experimental techniques performed will include:
