The Department of Oncology's Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist 1. This position is engaged in cancer research, translational medicine, and immunology. Specific cancers researched include lung, breast, colon, bladder, prostate, and ovarian.
CVI includes multiple researchers that develop novel, immune based therapies for treatment, prevention and diagnoses of cancer. This position provides support for basic research and pre-clinical trials in mice, that will potentially be developed into new human clinical trials. It supports the progression of an experiment from initial tests, progressing through the research toward the final pre-clinical project. These pre-clinical trials often result in additional funding for new clinical trials, supporting the development of translational research.
This position will work on two projects, developing vaccines for breast and lung cancer:
75% of their time with Dr. Stanton: Developing a ductal carcinoma in situ vaccine to prevent breast cancer and use of rexinoic acid receptor agonists to enhance immunogenicity of multiantigen DNA plasmid vaccines in breast cancer.
25% of their time with Dr. Riolobos: Study of efficacy and toxicity of a vaccine to prevent relapse in lung adenocarcinoma.
Job Duties:
• Perform tissue cell culture and cryopreservation using sterile techniques.
• Process animal tissue, including splenocyte preparation and preliminary tissue fixation.
• Basic microbiologic techniques, such as inoculate agar plates and growth media with bacteria.
• Independently perform giga-preps for DNA vaccines; coordinate with the schedule of animal vaccinations and independently maintain the stock of vaccine at levels adequate for experiment.
• Keep accurate records and documentation of experimental results and assist with database data entry as needed.
• Works under limited supervision, demonstrating the ability to work independently. Regularly report experimental results to the manager. Support multiple PI's projects.
• Perform general lab upkeep duties, including preparation of solutions for experiments, ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies, general laboratory maintenance, assure lab compliance with EH&S regulations and guidelines
• Other duties as needed
Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field, and one or more years of relevant laboratory research experience. Experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
• Experience with biochemical and microbiological techniques (DNA amplification and purification, bacteria culture).
• Experience with cell culture and tissue processing (splenocyte preparation or tissue fixation) working in a sterile BSL2 environment
• Must be exceptionally organized with attention to detail and superb time management
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work within a team-oriented environment
• Self-motivated individual with an interest in translational research
Desired:
• Experience with MS Excel.
