The Department of Neurology offers comprehensive consultation, evaluation and treatment services for adults and children with neurological disorders, through its clinical facilities at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care System and Seattle Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. Through our commitment to research, we continue to gain insight and understanding into the normal and abnormal functions of the human nervous system and how to care for related disorders. We are then able to share the knowledge gained and results of this research with our colleagues at the University, across the nation, and around the world. The Neurology Clerkship and Residency Training Programs represent significant foci of the Department's efforts. The Department of Neurology has been a center of clinical and academic excellence since 1995, and has a mission that includes meeting the health-care needs of patients with neurological issues, advancing knowledge through research in the clinical and basic neurosciences and training the next generation of neurologists in our residency program through its clinical facilities at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care System and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
The Department of Neurology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 2. The Research Scientist 2 will focus on understanding the causes of and developing treatments for dominantly inherited muscular dystrophies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Advancing ideas for research directions;
• performing experiments DNA cloning;
• tissue culture growth and differentiation studies;
• nucleic acid purification from cells and tissues;
• analysis of gene expression in tissue culture cells and tissues;
• viral vector cloning, purification and testing;
• DNA and vector transduction of cells and tissues;
• protein purification and quantification.;
• analyzing, displaying and disseminating results;
• evaluating data obtained from the experiments performed;
• collecting the data;
• comparing control and test data with previous results and with published literature in the field;
• identifying appropriate software to analyze the data;
• determining statistical significance of experimental results;
• preparing reports on data collected; presenting results at lab meetings and national meetings;
• preparing figures summarizing the data;
• writing and submitting manuscripts describing experiments performed and data obtained;
• assisting the lab manager on maintaining sufficient animal numbers, i.e. developing breeding schemes and reports on animal use and numbers;
• monitoring animal health;
• injection and sacrifice of test animals;
• collecting biological samples from test and control animals.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, plus at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Additional requirements:
Working knowledge of muscular dystrophies, cloning techniques, vector use and production, cell culture methods, RNAi knowledge and experience, outstanding writing skills, able to prepare and give research presentations at meetings.
Microscopy skills for muscle; generation of AAV and lentiviral vectors.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
