The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, housed in the School of Public Health, has an opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist Assistant. The Research Scientist Assistant will join an established environmental toxicology laboratory researching the effect of various environmental chemical exposures on a gut microbiome and host signaling. The lab was recently awarded federal grants to investigate the role of early life exposure to flame retardants on gut microbiome and delayed onset of metabolic syndrome using animal models.
The candidate will work closely with a senior level researcher, graduate students, and faculty principal investigator to perform assigned tasks requiring the application of standard molecular biological procedures and techniques. Supporting federal funded studies, duties will include
•Perform DNA/RNA/protein isolations, metabolite extractions, mouse handling and tissue dissections, standard molecular biology techniques including PCR and qPCR; protein expression, and second-generation sequencing.
•Maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks
•Contributing data for use in reports, documents and presentations;
•Attending weekly lab meetings
•Organizing and backing-up data at lab shared-drive
•Monitoring laboratory supplies and order supplies and equipment as needed
•Contributing to scientific papers for publication.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in microbiology, biology, environmental health, or equivalent laboratory based discipline. Minimum three months of related work experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Experience with multiple laboratory processes and instrumentation, including PCR, qPCR, among others. Proficient in Microsoft office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Up to one year of experience working directly in a gut microbiome laboratory with an emphasis on environmental health.
