From the laboratories of the Physiology and Biophysics department have come fundamental contributions to the understanding of the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, muscle contraction, endocrinology, respiration, ion channels, molecular motors, and the cytoskeleton. These successes have been achieved by the application of a host of principles and techniques from molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, engineering, and mathematics to the study of living cells and organisms. One of the outstanding aspects of the department is the high degree of collegiality and collaboration among research groups, translating into great opportunities for interdisciplinary projects for students and postdocs. The Department of Physiology & Biophysics has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to aid in the performance of NIH funded research that seeks to understand the neural basis of eye movement.
Position tasks:
•Perform behavioral training of animals and assist with animal care for experimental purposes.
•Perform behavioral experiments of animals.
•Clean laboratory, recording booths and NHP chairs.
•Prepare instruments and supplies for, and assist with, animal surgeries and experiments.
•Identify expired materials and discard them in accordance with UW policies.
•Participate in lab meetings and planning sessions; coordinate with other project and veterinary staff.
•Order and maintain records of laboratory supplies.
•Perform experimental data collection and assist in data analysis.
•Stay current with regulations, required trainings and IACUC protocols.
Minimum Requirements:
•Bachelor's degree in a biological science. Equivalent experience can be substituted for degree requirement.
•At least two years experience working with experimental animals, preferably non-human primates.
•Ability to work independently and collaborate well with a diverse group of people.
•Able to lift at least 50 lbs.
Desired:
•Knowledge of basic biology.
•Able to work in a consistent and reliable manner.
•Knowledge of experimental animal management and protocols.
•Able to assist clinical staff with general animal care.
•Understand the use of sanitary practices to keep the animals healthy and the employees safe.
•Sterile technique.
