The University of Washington (UW) Department of Neurosurgical Surgery has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Research Scientist I to work with our Brain Tumor Tissue Bank. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced research scientist to perform complex fresh and frozen biobanking procedures, as well as integral data management. This position will report to a Neurosurgeon and work will be supervised by leaders in Neurosurgery and Pathology. Under the general supervision of co-leaders, the research scientist will be integral in performing biorepository best practices for the annotation and characterization of neurosurgical specimens. Our operations are based at the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, and this Biorepository aims to serve both internal and external research collaborators throughout the greater Seattle region and beyond. These internal and collaborative research efforts continue to generate innovative, translational studies in the basic mechanisms of brain tumor biology, diagnostics, and potential therapeutic applications.
The successful applicant will interface with the Northwest BioTrust for research subject consent verification, tissue procurement, and specimen tracking. After tissue procurement, the successful applicant will process, embed, cut, mount, and stain frozen tissue in preparation for digital pathology scanning. The successful applicant will be required to perform manual histological staining; use care and maintain histology instruments; perform quality control and quality assurance; assist in development of new procedures; monitor reagent use, and perform preventative maintenance on instruments according to prescribed protocols. The successful applicant will work with the neuropathologist co-director to annotate histological features of the biospecimens. For fresh tissue procurement, the successful applicant may also be expected to participate in and establish protocols for living biobank specimens, such as cell culture and/or organoid preparation. The successful applicant will be expected to organize and maintain updated databases on neurosurgical subjects, fresh and frozen tissues, digital pathology archives, and other materials, as well as navigate the laboratory and departmental computer networks, participate in lab and other meetings, provide regular progress updates, review work lists and prioritize work in conjunction with the biorepository co-directors. Finally, the research scientist will be expected to assist with a variety of special projects, and research related duties as assigned in a research environment where innovation and novel analytic applications form the foundation of an integrated model of precision medicine.
