Laboratory Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time (100%), day shift, CLINICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN 2. Under general supervision, provide laboratory support in the Clinical HMC Retrovirology Laboratory in the Virology Division, Department of Laboratory Medicine, with primary responsibilities in the following areas: receive and process clinical trials specimens and organize specimens for laboratory testing. Perform routine kit-based laboratory testing, such as immunoassays. The job will include a variety of other tasks supporting the operation of a clinical laboratory including instrument maintenance, quality control activities, preparation of reagents, and assisting in with test validation studies. Assist in training new employees, residents and students on routine laboratory testing, safety protocols, and specimen processing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Receive, inventory, log and organize clinical trials and other research specimens. Process specimens according to appropriate protocol
Process complex research specimens specific to each individual study
Perform ficoll density gradient separation of blood cells. Perform manual cell counts using a hemacytometer. Cryopreserve peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) according to clinical trials protocols. Process serum, plasma and other clinical trials/research samples
Organize protocol specimens for shipment to the network-specified repository or testing laboratory
Perform quality control assessments (viability and viable recovery) on cryopreserved cells processed in this and other laboratories
Perform and result kit-based assays, eg immunoassays
Operate and perform required maintenance on laboratory equipment such as electronic balances, microscopes, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, centrifuges
Prepare and maintain reagents, chemical solutions, according to established procedures
Receive and unpack or prepare and ship biohazard/infectious materials in accordance with DOT and IATA regulations. Respond to any shipment problem report in a timely fashion. Inform supervisor and document response
Pull or return samples from and to freezers in a timely manner and track freezer inventory and maintenance
Follow protocol specifications unless otherwise instructed by Director, MLS Lead or Research Scientist. Thoroughly document any modifications
Perform data processing of laboratory results; perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, recording and charting; prepare and/or send data for computer processing; perform filing related to storage of laboratory results with accuracy and legible records
Use the LDMS and HAWS programs for laboratory reporting
Assist in training new employees on routine testing, safety and laboratory protocols and guidelines
Anticipate and communicate needs for new supplies to ordering personnel in timely fashion
Perform the work of a Clinical Laboratory Technician 1
Perform related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:
An Associate Degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology
OR
equivalent education/experience.
DESIRED:
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to handle a high volume of calls, prioritizing and working under pressure calmly and efficiently
Familiarity with Department of Laboratory Medicine operations and procedures
Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory
Experience with laboratory information system
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
May be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, including but not limited to UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, etc.
May be required to work weekends and holidays
Are considered essential staff and required to report to work in inclement weather
