A Research Scientist/Engineer 2 position is available at the Northwest Lipid Metabolism and Diabetes Research Laboratories in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition, University of Washington.

Responsible for the organization and the analysis in the General Chemistry area.  Duties are to closely interact with the Laboratory Technical Manager and the Director for problem solving, facilitating communications and for improving quality of the laboratory in the general chemistry area. Position will have primary responsibility for Roche Cobas c105 Chemistry Analyzer maintenance, calibration, running and acceptance of required controls, analysis of daily and long-term drift quality controls and performing general chemistry analysis of lipid, blood chemistries and proficiency testing samples.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Perform routine and priority analyses in assigned area.
          -   Operation of automated laboratory equipment (Cobas c501).
  • Monitor analysis turn-over for various studies.
  • Sample processing.
  • Troubleshoot problems with assays. Evaluate test results and recognize abnormal values according to protocols.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory and ordering materials for efficient operation of general chemistry area.
  • Monitor performance of daily and long term quality controls, sign and file all reports/printouts.
  • Assist Laboratory Technical Manager and Director in performing QA/QC audits, preparing reports.
  • Applying knowledge of techniques, principles, theory and validation of assays.
  • Implement new assays and methods for analyzing data.
  • Lead and train laboratory staff in the General Chemistry area. 
  • Aid in laboratory accreditation. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, or related Scientific Field with a minimum of one to three years job-related experience.

    Additional Requirements:
  • Must know and use concepts, practices and procedures in the performance of auto analyzer based analysis.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Desire experience in handling biological samples, good laboratory skills, and strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
  • Performance of procedures with high level of accuracy.
