Our LABORATORY MEDICINE DEPARTMENT has an outstanding full-time position for a Research Scientist/Engineer (RSE) 2. The RSE 2 in the Virology Laboratory supports research looking at viral replication, viral-host protein-protein interactions, drug efficacy, viral evolution, and viral genome sequencing fields. Responsibilities include laboratory organization, wet-lab experiments, data analysis, participation in the creation and implementation of new procedures and draft standard operation procedures, and scientific data archiving. The person in this role will be expected to attend and participate in laboratory meetings.
General Duties:
- Perform molecular procedures including but not limited to real-time PCR, sanger sequencing, PCR product detection DNA sequencing and next generation sequencing
- Sequencing and proteomic analysis
- Develop and maintain next-generation sequencing data analysis pipelines
- Manage the storage and organize sequencing data using both commercial and open source software
- Analyze (sequence database search, alignment, assembly, taxonomic classification, SNP analysis), visualize, and report biological sequence data
- Independently execute documented protocols for quantitative viral detection on research and clinical specimens
- Prepare chemical, DNA, and RNA reagents used in laboratory assays
- Engage in developing novel assays, modifying and refining procedures and techniques to obtain optimal results
- Optimize protocols and troubleshoot experiments are necessary to generate relevant data and improve data quality
- Organization of laboratory including chemical and biological safety, ordering, and processing orders
- Assist in identifying research project goals; initiates small to moderate size program/projects; work is organized and prioritized appropriately
- Lead projects of a small to moderate size and scope; makes substantial contributions to determining feasibility of goals and objectives
- Train and monitor new employees and guest technicians in experimental procedures and assays, laboratory safety and database maintenance
- Coordinate sample repository
- Perform work accurately, precisely and meets test completion deadlines. Accommodate schedule changes to cooperatively accomplish required daily work
- Contribute data and analyses for grant submissions and assist in the preparation of publications and presentations
- Write and edit manuscripts
- Present and update research progress at lab meeting or joined group settings
- Analyze issues and projects thoroughly, considers all factors; obtains and uses resources as necessary
- Maintain, complete, accurate, legible records. Thoroughly document any modifications
- Provide ongoing feedback; identifies development opportunities and actively solicits collaborative projects with other research scientists
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s in Life Science (including biology, microbiology, zoology, etc.,) AND 3-4 years of working experience in molecular biology related fields.
Desired:
- Experience with PCR testing methods and sequencing technologies
- Experience with Python programming
- Computer skills with Unix and Linux
- Good laboratory practice (GLP) skills.
