The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) is one of 12 basic science departments in the School of Medicine. The mission of the department is to advance knowledge and improve the health and welfare of humans and animals through excellent service support, biomedical research, and teaching. DCM is the central laboratory animal medicine resource at the University of Washington, supporting over 114,000 assignable square feet of animal facilities with an average daily census in excess of 100,000 animals across multiple species (e.g., rodents, rabbits, swine, and zebrafish). The department employs over 175 individuals who provide a comprehensive range of animal husbandry, veterinary, and laboratory services across numerous vivaria. The UW animal care program is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC) and provides services to over 400 principal investigators. Faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and residents (laboratory animal medicine and pathology) conduct basic and clinical research on a wide range of subjects including, but not limited to, comparative aspects of infectious disease, aging, cancer biology and genetics.
The Department of Comparative Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Research Scientist/Engineer 2 position within the University of Washington Center for Lung Biology to work with well-established investigators from the Department of Comparative Medicine and Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. This research position will support studies that use mouse models to measure pulmonary inflammation and physiology in genetically engineered mouse strains with a focus on mouse models of asthma. It will also assist with studies using mice models to define the pulmonary host response to influenza virus. Animal related work will use established protocols to measure alterations in immune cells, mRNA, and proteins with the use of quantitative PCR, ELISA, histopathology, and flow cytometry. Other tasks will include performing flow cytometry and cell culture. Work with cell cultures will be translational requiring the isolation and characterization of mouse and human leukocyte populations.
