The Department of Family Medicine has an excellent opportunity for a Temporary, Full-Time Research Scientist 2 to work on research a fast-paced multi-disciplinary study to advance self-testing of influenza – this work is part of a larger project called the Seattle Flu Study.
The position will assist Dr. Matthew Thompson (Department of Family Medicine) and Dr. Barry Lutz (Department of Bioengineering) with the execution of clinical research studies. The focus of the research group is in two areas that are part of the wider Seattle Flu Study (SFS), which is housed at the UW and involves research collaborations across several departments (Infectious Disease, Genome Sciences, Bioengineering) and institutions (UW Medicine, Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center, Children’s Hospital). The work will primarily contribute to the following specific components of the wider SFS: 1) Evaluation the feasibility and accuracy of an influenza test that individuals will use to test themselves for influenza. 2) Contributing to ‘Data enhanced diagnostics’ which aims to see if real time information can be used to help make the results of flu tests more immediately useful. Additional research will occur in collaboration with other components of the SFS.
This position will involve primarily the organization and execution of research studies. This will include project management of research and/or conducting research including qualitative and quantitative designs, collecting primary data, analyzing quantitative and/or qualitative research data, and interpreting findings. This position will be responsible for preparing, in collaboration with other scientists and faculty, presentations, reports and manuscripts that describe research findings.
The Research Scientist 2 will work in a collegial and collaborative environment with staff and faculty from the UW Family Medicine Research Section as well as the UW Department of Bioengineering and other groups within the SFS, requiring excellent communication and collaboration skills.
This individual must have proven ability to work independently and in collaboration with and under supervision by a variety of researchers and project staff on assigned projects. The Research Scientist’s direct supervisor will be Dr. Matthew Thompson, Professor, Department of Family Medicine.
The Research Scientist’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Being responsible for some or all of the operations of projects, from development of protocols to study implementation and evaluation
• Working with clinical sites and community sites to implement and conduct different types of evaluations of influenza self-tests
• Collaborating with teams to design projects collaboratively or independently, as expertise allows
• Contributing to the design of research projects
• Assembling, cleaning and managing analytic datasets using conventions established by the Research Section
• Identifying appropriate methods and conducting descriptive and inferential statistical analyses of research data
• Developing presentations and preparing parts or all (depending on the composition of the research team) of reports and manuscripts
• Conducting literature reviews and synthesis of information for projects, manuscripts and grants
• Assisting in development of IRB applications
• Preparing and obtaining appropriate reviews of project reports/briefs and publications
• Supporting other activities that support research and evaluation of new technologies in primary care settings
Required:
• Master’s degree in public health or related field
• At least 1-3 years of experience developing and conducting health-related research or project management related to clinical research
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently
• Excellent English writing skills
• Experience working in clinical or bioengineering research
• Experience operationalizing clinical studies
• Excellent time management skills
• Proficiency in standard office word processing, graphics and spreadsheet software
• Interpersonal and communication skills needed to work with a multidisciplinary team of faculty investigators, research scientists, and research staff
Desired:
Demonstrated experience with clinical research involving primary care clinical settings
Experience with research related to diagnostic testing
Experience conducting focus groups or interviews with patients and/or clinicians
Experience with the Institutional Review Board human subjects review process
Experience with use of REDCap
Proficiency in use of analytic software such as Atlas.ti, NVivo, SAS, SPSS, and/or STATA
