The Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine has an outstanding
opportunity for a TemporaryResearch Scientist/Engineer 2 in the Eldredge Lab.
Dr. Eldredge is a pediatric pulmonologist and physician-scientist focused on understanding the role of macrophages in severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a devastating neonatal lung disease with no effective treatments. Under direction by Dr. Eldredge, the Research Scientist/Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of translational research program activities.
Primary job responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Translational research
• Working with clinical research coordinators at UW to coordinate human sample collection
• Database entry for clinical specimens
• >10 color flow cytometry/FACS to identify and isolate immune cells
• Preparation of samples for RNA Sequencing (RNASeq) in collaboration with BRI Genomics Core
• Starting and maintaining primary epithelial cell cultures
• Murine model of BPD
• Genotyping mice: candidate must have experience in PCR and DNA electrophoresis
• Database entry
• Clinical monitoring of mice in studies – up to twice a day, some weekend days, but no more than 5 days per week
• Dissection of mice for histological analyses
• Histologic analysis of lung sections
• Satisfy all requirements for participation in animal research and to maintain animal research records as regulated.
• Preparing laboratory reagents for experiments including chemicals and solutions
• Performing chemical, physical, or biological analyses following written protocols.
o DNA and RNA preparation and analysis
o Quantitative Real Time RT-PCR
o 9 (PCR)
o ELISAs
o Multicolor flow cytometry
• Maintain laboratory records by recording detailed data, including photography and computer input, in a literate and thorough manner
• Conduct literature searches and read literature applicable to research area.
• Conduct lab inventory, complete purchase orders for hardware, glassware, and supplies.
• Prepare progress reports including gathering, organizing, and interpreting data and preparing data for presentations and manuscripts.
• There are opportunities for presentation of work at international meetings and co-authorship on publications
• Attend lab meetings and interact with other scientific personnel.
• Perform other research duties as required and defined by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field and 2-3 years of relevant work experience. Willingness to work with mice and to regularly learn new experimental procedures. Solid knowledge of principles of immunology, cell and molecular biology, and genetics. Some degree of schedule flexibility due to logistics of experiments that begin on the day mice are born.
Desired: • Additional research experience past undergraduate, including M.S. or PhD degrees. Experience in common molecular and cellular biology techniques including, but not limited to flow cytometry, primary cell culture, nucleic acid and protein isolation and analysis, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy.
