The Division of General Internal Medicine has a great opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 4. The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will serve as a biostatistician addressing substantively important questions on Alzheimer’s disease and the aging brain in aging bodies in several studies currently underway with Paul Crane and his lab. The position will include conducting data analyses, integrating data management, assisting with and taking the lead on manuscript writing, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals. There will be tremendous opportunity to grow as part of a very productive team. The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will be able to learn new methods from senior staff, and to develop independent research if desired.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Integrate data management for large prospective cohort studies with complex data structures, including genetic, clinical, study questionnaire, laboratory, pharmacy, imaging, and neuropathology data at multiple institutions. Lead the processing, documentation, storage, and retrieval of data for the Crane lab, with support of the project manager, and create relevant variables for use by study investigators. Communicate closely with research study personnel regarding changes and updates within the project.

  • Design, conduct, and write up appropriate statistical analyses to address critically important questions on relationships between aging brains and aging bodies.
       - Collaborate with other investigators nationally and internationally on a variety of projects; identifying, developing and applying recent and new methodology; contribute to the organization and content of national and international meetings and workshops.
       - Plan and conduct a wide variety of data analyses, including developing analytic datasets, compiling results files, generating figures, and preparing tables. Models will include survival analysis and mixed models, with careful diagnostics. Selection weights and techniques for missing data will be necessary.
       - After any necessary training, perform sophisticated statistical analyses of complex cognitive testing and other psychometric data using structural models.

  • Write scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with relevant investigators at the University of Washington and at other institutions, foreign and domestic.

  • Conduct preliminary studies and power calculations for grant proposals.

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree or higher in Public Health, Biostatistics, or Statistics and 4+ years of experience in a related area

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED

    Statistical skills include:

  • Conducting a wide variety of statistical analyses, including various longitudinal models.
  • Proficiency in Stata, SAS, and/or R.

    Communication skills include:

  • Presenting complex methods and findings clearly and succinctly to a variety of audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • The diplomacy needed for local, national, and international collaboration, the tenacity to see projects completed, and the positivity to be a supportive and effective team member.

    Other necessary skills include:

  • The ability to manage dozens of papers and projects at the same time, always meeting key deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Organization and documentation habits so that research is easily reproducible.
