The Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer – Assistant.

Under general supervision, perform support functions for a panel of clinical studies dealing with infectious diseases among critically ill patients. Assist in the implementation of clinical studies, including (but not limited to):  IRB applications and related forms, data collection forms, patient screening and enrollment, gather and compile data, sponsor/IRB communications, verification of investigative procedures to accomplish research goals, assist in developing and setting up database files, and  process human biological specimens.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design of specific phases of research projects; researches approach, hypotheses and/or methodology development:
  • Researcher will assist with the development of new research approaches including helping to identify new study populations and establishing study kiosks to capture data from the target populations             
  • Provide feedback on study procedures and methodology to continue improving and streamlining the study protocols
  • Conducts experiments or tests in the field/ Performs research data collection:
    - The researcher will record participant data and collect clinical samples from specific study locations
  • May assist with PCR on collected samples from a specific portion of the study
  • Contributes data for use in reports and publications.

    Specimen Collection & Coordination:

  • Assist Research Coordinator to obtain patient specimens (e.g., blood, urine, stool, nasal swabs, etc.).
  • Coordinate and assist in collection, processing, inventory and shipping of study specimens.
  • Obtain research specimens from outside providers in compliance with institution and federal regulations.

    Data Coordination:

  • Extract technical and medical information from institution or clinical records.
  • Verify accuracy of research data.
  • Use data management programs to prepare summary narrative reports.
  • Create graphs, tables, charts and illustrations.
  • Use a computerized system for tracking study subjects; monitor data quality control to ensure adherence to study protocol.

    Safety/Response to Emergencies:

  • Participate in interdepartmental efforts to facilitate a safe environment for all staff and patients.
  • Keep up to date on safety procedures including fire plan, disaster drills, evacuation routes, etc.
  • Report knowledge of hazards to the supervisor.
  • Follows safety/biohazards procedures and practices "Universal Precautions" at all times.

  • Bachelor's degree in health or other related field with less than 1 year of experience in a related area

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Prior research experience with solid organ transplant population:
  • Knowledge and experience with infection control precautions in the in- and out-patient setting.
  • Prior lab experience with handling, processing, and transporting of human biological specimens.
  • Research specific training in Protection of Human Research Subjects, Good Clinical Practices, HIPAA compliance, Blood Borne Pathogens, Shipping and Transporting Hazardous Materials, Laboratory Safety Compliance, and Managing Laboratory Chemicals training.
  • Familiar with electronic medical record programs (ORCA, EPIC, MAX, and MindScape).
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Science background in Physiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Mycology, and Statistics.


  • May work weekends and holidays.
  • May participate in shared call duty on clinical research studies.
  • Must be able to communicate clinical information in English to clinicians, nursing, support staff and patients.
  • This position may be stressful at times in that there is pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Will work with biohazards, including blood, stool, urine, and other body fluids.
  • Must be able to handle patient specimens at cold temperatures (-80ºC) using gloves.
  • May work with infectious patients and must be able to suit-up (gloves, gown, and mask) according to droplet precautions. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens through needle stick or biohazard spill.
  • Will need to be able to travel to multiple hospitals via shuttle
  • Occasional out of town travel for research-related conferences.
