School of Environmental & Forest Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for two Research Scientist Engineer Assistant positions. These positions assist with the collection and processing of data for scientific research conducted by the Fire and Environmental Research Applications Team. There are multiple existing projects for field data collection. Projects include, but are not limited to, characterization of wildland fuels in multiple locations in the United States; evaluation of fuel consumption during prescribed burning in Utah, and post-fire tree damage inventory on a subset of prescribed burn units in eastern Washington. This data will be used to assess fuel consumption and tree damage and evaluate the over-all predictive capability of fuels and fire behavior models. Plot data collection includes identification and physical measurements of trees, understory plants, and decaying vegetation.
Work Environment
This position will require outdoor work in conditions that may include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, inclement weather, and insects. Field work may include physical exertions, such as, walking in steep terrain, lifting and carrying measurement equipment and samples, working in inclement weather, exposure to smoke during prescribed fires, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning to evening hours. Field work will require travel for extended periods of 7 to 14 days. Field work is often scheduled with little or no notice. Accommodations may include camping, hotels, or common living spaces such as barracks or house rentals.
Responsibilities
•Assist scientists with accurate field data and sample collection efforts. Conducts sample processing, data entry and data quality control in laboratory.
•Assist scientists with laboratory data collection.
•Conducts entry of data into appropriate databases, assures data quality using established protocols.
•Assist with development of field and laboratory data collection protocols.
•Maintains laboratory equipment and purchases new supplies when directed.
•Performs related duties as required.
Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include (approx. 3 months to 1 yr. experience):
•Experience collecting wildland fire fuels data in rugged environments, including during fire incidents. Experience collecting fuel samples and processing samples in laboratory setting. Experience with data entry using complex protocols, quality control of large volumes of data.
•Demonstrated ability to work safely in remote and challenging terrain.
•Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, and organizational abilities.
•Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
•Demonstrated ability to work in active fire environments.
•Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, students, and research scientists.
•Strong communication and interpersonal skills including ability to write technical documentation.
•Sincere interest in learning about natural resource management applications and fire and smoke science.
•Wilderness First Aid certification.
•Wildland Chainsaw certification or ability to obtain the certification (S-212 or equivalent).
•National Interagency Fire Coordination Center Incident Qualification as Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2).

Requirements:
•Bachelor’s degree in natural resources field: forestry, ecology, biology or related field.
Knowledge, skills and abilities that are desirable, providing for an enhanced level of job performance, include:
•Wilderness first responder certification.
•National Interagency Fire Coordination Center Incident Qualification as Fire Effects.
•Monitor (FEMO) or ability to be certified.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
