The William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist Engineer Fusion Z-Pinch Experiment Lab.
The ideal candidate for this position must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty and staff of many social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Manage projects related to plasma research under general guidance.
• Operate plasma physics experiments, acquire and analyze both experimental and computational data.
• Design, procure, assemble, and operate scientific instrumentation for measuring plasma parameters including:
- Magnetic fields,
- Ion velocity flows,
- Electron density,
- Visible, vacuum ultra-violet, and X-ray emission spectroscopy.
• Disseminate scientific information: The candidate is expected to contribute to writing scientific journal articles and to deliver scientific presentations at professional conferences and to other technical audiences.
• Mentor graduate student researchers by providing guidance in the development of professional skills and helping them to understand how analytic and methodological undertakings link to project deliverables.
• Assist in project planning and management assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness for projects.
• Effective and professional oral and written communication skills. The candidate is expected to interact in a collaborative manner with other team members and co-workers, in addition to supervisor.
• Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
• PhD in plasma physics or related field and 2 or more years of related experience.
• Working knowledge and experience with:
- Windows and Linux operating systems, including system management
- Python or similar scripting languages
- SolidWorks or similar CAD software
• Familiarity with pulsed high-voltage power supplies, capacitor banks, and associated safety systems
• Familiarity with high-vacuum systems
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
