The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization that produces cutting-edge scientific and policy-relevant quantitative evidence for use by policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders. Based at the University of Washington, IHME’s ongoing work provides high-quality measurement of the world’s major health problems, assesses how these problems are being addressed, and identifies how best to dedicate resources to maximize health improvement. A cornerstone of IHME’s research has been the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) enterprise. Based at IHME and involving more than 3,300 collaborators from across the world, the GBD is the world’s largest systematic, scientific effort to quantify the magnitude of health loss from all diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, sex, and geographic location over time.
IHME has an excellent opportunity for a Researcher to generate fatal and non-fatal estimates for cardiovascular diseases and related risk factors.
The individual will help to refine, test, and implement methods. The individual will identify, assess, and transform available quantitative data on incidence, prevalence, causes of death, and related determinants from a variety of sources including surveys, clinical records, and scientific literature. He/she will need to learn methods, the related code, and how to use analytic tools in order to generate and improve upon the estimates. The individual will be responsible for documenting and integrating the agreed analytic approach for estimation of each disease into the overall GBD enterprise. The Researcher must review and vet results, be able to identify and explain differences between different versions of them, and help to disseminate them. He/she will have a command of epidemiology, statistics, disease modeling, or related interests and we will help you develop an understanding of our core research and methodology. The Researcher supports key aims of the annual GBD enterprise, acting as a vital member of the CVD research team.
IHME has a fundamental belief that in order to be effective and policy relevant, input data and results also need to be understandable and actionable for a range of audiences. Our engagement strategies encompass this belief, the success of which is demonstrated by the continued growth of our existing collaborations through new and expanded projects with existing and first-time collaborators. The Researcher will be responsible for inviting critique from the broader scientific community and IHME’s collaborators specifically. He/she will be responsible for writing papers, giving presentations, and helping to instruct others in the demographic methods used in the broader GBD.
Overall, Researchers are critical members of agile, dynamic research teams. They are accountable for achieving key deliverables to make key indicators available and to produce ground-breaking science. This position is contingent on project funding availability.
