The Resident Director assumes a major leadership role in fostering a sense of community within the residential facilities through the use of student development theory and building operations management. The Resident Director has overall responsibility for developing and administering a comprehensive residential life program that achieves the goals of Housing & Food Services and Residential Life. The Resident Director should demonstrate an understanding of issues impacting diverse populations and support the development of inclusive communities.
A successful candidate will demonstrate professionalism, solid problem solving and administrative skills, effective methods for managing and coaching large and diverse populations of college students, and an eagerness to support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values and culture of Residential Life, Housing & Food Services, and the University of Washington.
Key Responsibilities include:
Supervision of Staff:
• Supervise an Assistant Resident Director (where applicable)
• Supervise the Resident Adviser/Community Assistant staff, ensuring consistency and support of Departmental standards and expectations
• Participate in student staff recruitment efforts, including screening and interviewing
• Contribute to Resident Director and Resident Adviser training through presenting, advising, coordinating and assisting as necessary
• Develop a working knowledge of diversity related campus and community resources and events available for student staff and leaders in order to refer accordingly and encourage students to take advantage of opportunities for ongoing learning and development.
Advising Student Groups:
• Support student leadership development by advising or working with Assistant Resident Directors who advise a hall council
• Promote collaboration between Hall Council leaders, Residence Education Programmers, the Residential Programming Board, and Resident Adviser staff
• Participate in student leadership trainings, roundtable discussions and assessments
Building Operations Management:
• Consult and work in collaboration with custodial, facilities maintenance, desk services and dining services to assess and address building, community, and individual student needs
• Maintain clear and accurate records of building charts, forms, and other necessary records
Student Conduct:
• Manage student conduct caseload efficiently and effectively; maintain records with high attention to detail
• Facilitate educationally purposeful conduct meetings with students emphasizing personal responsibility and an understanding of how one’s behavior impacts self and others
• Utilize educational sanctioning in accordance with established Residential Life Conduct Process philosophy and guidelines
Crisis Management:
• Understand and implement departmental/university emergency/crisis response protocols
• Appropriately collaborate and consult with other Student Life professionals regarding students needing additional support/resources
Professionalism:
• Support and assist in the leadership of delivering the mission, goals, values and culture of Residential Life, Housing & Food Services, and the University of Washington
• Provide leadership within the Residential Life Team and facilitate productive interactions with all staff
• Role model an understanding of, and respect for, existing policies and procedures
• Think critically about and take initiative to improve and/or develop systems, processes and projects
• Role model proficient use of resources; generously share professional experiences, resources, protocols and ideas
• Manage stress, conflict and frustration constructively; demonstrate a positive attitude
• Serve as a member of Residential Life Team committees; seek opportunities to develop new and/or enhance current programs/activities
• Create a framework for ethical decision making in overall work
• Seek personal education on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion by taking advantage of opportunities offered through HFS, UW and the greater Seattle community.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
Position must:
• Live on-campus in a residence hall or apartment community
• Participate in an on-call duty rotation team providing coverage 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, including holidays
• Work extended hours during peak times of the academic year
• Limit extended vacations to Summer Quarter, Winter Break, and Spring Break
• Work evening and occasional weekends throughout the year
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s Degree and one year of residence hall supervisory experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in Student Personnel or related field.
RECRUITMENT TIMELINE
This position is open until filled; the timeline will include attendance of The Placement Exchange in late February and on campus interviews in March and April. We anticipate multiple openings with a start timeline in mid-July.
