Disability Resources for Students has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Access Coordinator. The Senior Access Coordinator of Disability Resources for Students works directly with enrolled students with disabilities to determine eligibility for academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services, works to implement and coordinate these services and monitors their effectiveness for the students, including ensuring that the accommodations are provided by the University faculty and staff. The position also serves a primary counseling liaison role to UW programs and professional schools with complex clinical components including, but not limited to the UW School of Medicine and other health sciences departments.
The position is responsible for analysis of medical documentation, determination of appropriate and reasonable accommodations, development of programs and resources to meet identified accommodation needs, counseling students regarding their academic progress and success, and advising and assisting faculty in the implementation of identified accommodations. This involves interaction among complex systems in an increasingly technical field, as well as ensuring compliance with Federal and State statutes. The position requires a high level of independent decision-making and professional judgment, and collaborative partnerships.
The Senior Access Coordinator promotes disability awareness and advocacy in the campus community; providing technical and educational assistance to faculty, staff and students to ensure effective accommodation and equal access and inclusion for students with disabilities; including advising on the use of universal design concepts and principles. The position supports the development and implementation of office policies and procedures and understanding, applying and interpreting office and University policies and procedures and applicable State and Federal rules, regulations and laws.
This position is a leader among peers, providing guidance and structure in case reviews, collaboration, and promoting a positive office culture.
Accommodation Counseling
•Establish eligibility for services and determine reasonable and effective academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services for students with temporary or permanent disabilities through an interactive process involving the student, documentation from the student’s healthcare provider and, when necessary, consultation with faculty and staff.
•Effectively provide professional and collaborative case management of assigned students contacts, and UW academic college/school partnerships.
•Serve as a member of the Access Coordinator team, including but not limited to; lead and participate in case reviews, contribute to evaluations of the interactive process, and actively collaborate to achieve team goals and responsibilities.
•Provide technical and instructional assistance and support for faculty, staff, administration and students related to effective implementation of approved academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services.
•Provide advice and problem-solving support for students with disabilities regarding their rights and responsibilities in the interactive process; and advocacy and meditation support related to navigating campus access and barriers.
•Provide effective coordination of approved academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services such as but not limited to classroom and presented material access, communication access services, alternative testing and course/clinical participation with campus and academic partners.
•Understand and appropriately apply, interpret and explain office and University policies and procedures and State and Federal rules, regulations and laws (e.g., Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990). Provide technical and instructional assistance and support for faculty, staff, administration and students working with students with disabilities.
•Maintain accurate and detailed student case management records in accordance with office and University policies and procedures.
•Create, foster and maintain collaborative working relationships with campus faculty, staff, administration and students.
•Assist prospective students, their families, high school counselors and community college advisers in understanding transition issues for students with disabilities from high school or community college and the process for requesting services at the university.
•Remain current on research and legal activity in the field and national trends to guide policy/procedure development/revision and recommend improvements in the delivery of services for the office and more broadly across the campus.
Program Administration and Leadership
•Recruit, hire, train and supervise volunteer and/or paid student and temporary staff responsible for assisting with service provision to students with disabilities.
•Participate and provide leadership in office strategic planning efforts, programming, advising and policy development pertaining to access issues and inclusion for students with disabilities.
•Prepare a quarterly report for the Director, or designee, regarding academic programs assigned to and include information on student usage, trends and impacts, summary of DRS service efforts, and other pertinent or requested information.
•Perform regular assessment evaluations related to assigned program and services connected to students with disabilities and campus partners assigned in caseload.
•Contribute to the implementation of assessment tools for the office to obtain feedback on the quality and effectiveness of service provision to students, faculty and staff.
Consultation and Outreach
•Promote and facilitate disability awareness, access and inclusion through training, advocacy and accommodations.
•Assist in advising the campus community as appropriate on the use and implementation of universal design concepts and principles; identifying barriers to access and inclusion and providing counsel on how to build a universally accessible environment.
•Provide resource and referral information to the campus community and general public, which includes but is not limited to information on disabilities, information to promote disability awareness, information about the services of the office and information about community-based services available for people with disabilities.
•Build and maintain good working relationships with off-campus disability community/service agencies.
•Serve on campus committees as requested by the Director, or designee.
Lead Responsibilities:
•Serve a primary counseling liaison role to UW academic program and professional schools with difficult to determine accommodations and complex clinical components including but not limited to Schools of: Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work.
•Provide coordination and support for office projects and resource development including but not limited to; program resources, outreach coordination and accommodation services management.
•Provide peer leadership to access coordinators.

Qualifications:
•Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling, or related field.
•Two years professional experience in the field working with students with disabilities in higher education
•Strong knowledge and understanding of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA and other pertinent federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students;
•Sensitivity and competency in working with a diverse population
•Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
•Ability to direct and organize work of self and others
•Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to work collaboratively with others
•Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
•Working knowledge of common computer applications (e.g. word processing, PowerPoint, databases);
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Desired Qualifications:
•Two to three years professional experience providing accommodations for with students with disabilities in higher education
•Demonstrated conflict management skills
•Progressively increasing experience in program management
•Experience with supervision and/or direction of office support staff
•Knowledge of universal design and social model of disability
•Fluency in American Sign Language
•Knowledge of assistive technologies for people with disabilities
•Demonstrated experience in working on equity and diversity initiatives within and across different constituencies
Working Environmental Conditions:
•Regularly work 40+ hours per week between 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
•Occasional evening and weekend hours are required
